Some really surprising scores for a Kast album
Anyways this is a 9.0/10 for me. I find that the skits sort of take away the energy but the tracks are all really special, if you thought they were experimental before than this one really pushed a lot of boundaries without compromising quality. Bombs Over Baghdad alone consolidates this album as a classic. To further elaborate on its relevance, this album helped elevate hip-hop (Atlanta especially) to more mainstream recognition; it was the right album at the right time it's very fitting that 3Stacks said when they won the album of the year grammy for SB/TLB "Stakonia's not Outkast's first album".Jakey, dkdnfbdjdkdddjdjfvcgfl and Ordinary Joel like this. -

Ah, Stankonia.
I like the songwriting, energy, production, & lyricism on every track. ALL the tracks have heavy replay value to me.
The album as a whole is very well-structured, very cohesive, all the tracks flow nicely together, & the skits do well as breaks between tracks.
I really can't find a single con or take-away. Stankonia is flawless, imo.
Imma give it a 10/10.Jakey, Fire Squad and Ricky like this. -

Great selection btw I love this album.
Been a while since I've listened to it though so I'll give it a spin over the next few days in between my Beatles binge and then I'll give a rating.Loyalty, dkdnfbdjdkdddjdjfvcgfl and Fire Squad like this. -

Imma give The Cool a 10/10
Even though it's not a full concept album (since the story is only covered in a few tracks) it's still a very cohesive, well-rounded piece of work, when it comes to substance.
Production is incredible too, sonically the album feels like a big film score.
Every aspect of this album was flawless, imo. The Cool is a perfect piece of work, it's easily my favorite Lupe project.Last edited: Jan 9, 2016Ordinary Joel, Jakey and Fire Squad like this. -

So, with Jay's last album being below his standards, but with some great songs (BP3) and Kanye's being one of the best rap albums ever made, I was excited, yet sceptical about this album. Mostly excited, because almost every collab they did before was at least great. And we also had Jay's verse on So Apalled and The Joy.. but also Monster. When HAM dropped, my expectations got a little lower because I wasn't a big fan of it initially. Then we got Otis, which I loved. It was so great that the album didn't leak days or weeks before like most do (if I remember correctly) and the first time I listened to it I was so happy that there were so many different sounds on it. From a more 'trap souding' HAM, to a club b-----r NIP, to a more calm RZA beat on New Day, the production was perfect. Both Kanye and Jay had great verses, but with a few 'solo songs' like Why I Love You/Welcome to the Jungle, for me Jay stole the show when it comes to rapping. The production made it sound more like a Kanye album though. The only songs I didn't really like were Lift Off and Made In America. I wasn't a big fan of the chorus of the latter and while Lift Off isn't really bad, it's pointless. Why have a very short Kanye verse and Jay just mumbling a few words? If they both had proper verses I would probably have this as one of my favourites; Beyonce did a great job on this. They both touched emotional and serious topics, but also explained to us why they named the album Watch The Throne.

I'd give fazoland an 8.6. What's always amazed me is how well herb, as a teenager, can portray his pain/depression without it sounding melodramatic. He's far too young to have had this much heartbreak but he sounds mature and is mature. You'd have to be in that situation.
Based upon 5 ratings, SectionEighty gives Welcome to Fazoland an 8.4.

Lil Herb is one of the best rappers rn. How talent like this gets overlooked simply due to the stigma associated with drill, or trap, or whatever the genre may be, really is mind boggling.
"and thats only the intro"
Every song feels like a moment in time encapsulated. It's feverish and strained -- but always deliberate. So much unfiltered clarity from such a young guy. He's proven to be more than nimble with his flow, even if his content becomes one note for some. And even if his content is somehow "one note," he still shows signs of being a more than capable writer. The act of emoting about x topic in an infinite number of ways is the epitome of being a great writer, after all. And he's far from one note as far as the emotional arcs on this tape are concerned.
"Im just giving you the real, cause Im from Hollywood or Beverly Hills...it's hard for a young black n----- like myself when the police compare one's self with...everybody else. So that means if you yourself they think you're everybody else."
Welcome to Fazoland isn't a cry to be saved, it's an open invitation to take the lifestyle slowly being simultaneously glamorized and invalidated by the media, for a test run -- if you can stomach it.
Fazoland finds its comfort in being universally accessible to those it's intended to empower, but I personally want to see Herb keep digging deeper and laying more of his own personal struggle on wax. He can do it. There are moments of this throughout the tape, for sure, but Herb is quick to live in the punchline driven/nonspecific rapping when given the chance. Tracks like "4 minutes in h--- pt. 3" find a great balance between both though. But "Mama I'm Sorry" is better, in my opinion.

Glad you used the right album artwork. The alternate one is boring. This is one of my favorite records and I champion it pretty regularly. Will definitely relisten and post some thoughts.

Woow you killed it with this pick. Hope this doesnt get overlooked. This is the definition of a classic album. I used to hate that I wasnt cognizant of music when this and other stuff around this era came out, but in retrospect it's fun to look back and listen to pre and post releases and notice the subtle shifts and influences that certain music had.
The production on this really genius and the main reason why I love this album. The walking basslines, just sit so comfortably behind the boom bap drums. Not to mention how perfectly the samples and instrumentation fill up the tracks. It's so creative and a nice change from the smoother, jazzier feel of tlet even though that was classic in its own as well.
Also, the flows ride the instrumentals so nicely. Love the moment when the vocals drop on pretty much every song.
The sequencing on this is great too, definitely one of those projects that you listen to front to back. The robotic narrator lady, definitely helps lead into some tracks. I especially like how it leads into "how we get down".
Dont really have much negative things to say about this project, but I do prefer the "nicer", more positive, mellow quest on their previous projects. The only thing that would make me put tlet over this, but I just dont have the heart to trump this down to #2.
Id say its an easy 9.5Maad City, Ordinary Joel and DKC like this. - May 3, 2025
