Mar 4, 2015 Need to do a review for Carter 4, that's a great album, it's what got me to become a Wayne fan & what made SL blew up
Mar 4, 2015 Tha Carter III - I feel like people either vastly over or underrate this album. Even though it's a shame it's nowhere near what it could have been with all the leaked tracks (wayne infamously didn't even know what the final tracklist), it's still a relentlessly fun album with a few clunkers that bring it down. 7.3 Next album/overall rating will be up in a sec
Mar 4, 2015 Based upon 13 ratings, SectionEighty gives Tha Carter III a 7.3 (d--- I was on point). Mar 4, 2015 I absolutely love this album. The chemistry among these cats seems so natural, no matter how many times you listen to this record; the way they go back and forth, the steady flows on some beautifull, jazzy production, and the demonstration of pure skill, even when they're not saying something memorable, make this a great debut album which is often overlooked. Of course it's among the best records that the Hieroglyphics crew had to offer (SoM are part of Hiero, along with several other rappers like Del the Funky Homosapien) and it might be accurate to say that this album influenced the overall sound of this rap collective. If you guys (@LukeS80, @BroadStBully2 and everyone else) haven't listened to this yet, please check it out when you have time, listening to the title track (which is my favourite, and among the stand-out songs from this record) will be enough to persuade you to check the whole thing, and maybe lead you to explore some other stuff like Deltron, or Mics Of The Round Table etc etc. I don't think that you'll be disappointed. I'll give this album a 9/10. It might sound a bit too generous, but I love it, it's enjoyable, it's fun and still sounds fresh. Excellent choice @BigCountry! edit: the title track:
Mar 4, 2015 I never knew that they were part of Hieroglyphics. I love 3rd Eye Vision & Full Circle, but the only rapper I knew by name was Del. I've heard that song before, I recognized the beat right away, I never knew who it was by though. Great song, I'll definitely check out the rest of the album.
Mar 4, 2015 Even though Del is easily the most prolific rapper from heiro, 93' til Infinity blows anything he or the rest of them did out of the water IMO. Deltron 3030 might be better, but I prefer the Souls of Mischief album.
Mar 4, 2015 For years and years 93 'til Infinity was one of my favorite, most listened to rap songs. I loved the song, and knew each verse word for word, but had never listened to any of their other songs. It wasn't until about a year ago that I discovered Souls of Mischief were a part of the Hieroglyphics crew, whose album 3rd Eye Vision I was very familiar with. That's when I decided to check out this album, and I'm sure glad I did. @Olorin sums it up nicely, but the charisma and chemistry heard on the title track can be found all over this album. It's a fun listen from beginning to end, with excellent laidback, jazzy production. More than 20 years later, the album holds up very well. This is how we chill. 8.6/10
Mar 5, 2015 I figured less people would have listened to this album, but not just two aside from me. d---.
Mar 5, 2015 Never heard this album before, but I already found it on spotify, so I will provide some feedback in two days. Let this thread's intent be discovering new music as well! Not only rating albums that even every stan listened to.
Mar 5, 2015 Nice sleeper choice for this edition wasn't expecting this one at all 8.7/10 - we already had brilliant summaries a few posts up so I'll just keep it plain. Very mellow instrumentals and not one bar goes to waste, I usually throw this in a mix with ATCQ & early The Roots for some phenomenal laid-back vibe music.
Mar 9, 2015 First of all, thanks for choosing an overlooked oldschool rap album for this round. I would never find out about their existence if it weren't for this thread tbh. In short, it's a lethal mixture of dope lyrics (some multis are really impressive) and the chill production. Rapping along with this album is incredibly fun. 8.5
Mar 9, 2015 Digable Planets are some of my all time favorites. They don't get enough love. Will update this tomorrow
Mar 9, 2015 Yeah, that's too bad Well the good thing is that the thread is quite active and frequently updated so more people (hopefully me too) will check it out for some good "new" stuff in future posts, not to mention that it's nice to talk about some different albums once in a while Spoiler inb4 MMLP2 hehe
