Mar 28, 2019 It's no Malibu. But I like it. Dre's involvement is pretty good imo and the feats do a good job. There are some meh songs on it that prevent it from being great. 7.5/10
Mar 28, 2019 5.5/10 Too inconsistent and doesn't really have any replay value in comparison to Malibu. Beat selection is a mixed bag, and the vibe just isn't really there. Seems to have an identity crisis in it's music. Pretty disappointing. Note that I'm not taking the features into consideration, if that were so, it may be a 6 at worst.
Mar 28, 2019 I'm predicting Paak's gonna drop a straight up classic on us with Ventura. He needed to get Oxnard outta his system first
Mar 28, 2019 Madvillainy gets a 10 from me by the way! Forgot to put a score down the other day. The intricate wordplay and extraordinary production is really a match made in heaven Oxnard gets a score of 6 from me. Definitely his weakest effort under the Paak moniker. The highs are soaring when they hit, but like it's been said previously, he's trying to meld too many identities together. Ventura will be the step in the right direction I hope
Mar 29, 2019 6/10 It hurts me to rate it this low, but when you have a mercurial talent like Paak and with Dr Dre involved the expectations deservedly should be high. And right there was the problem, Dre had an idea of trying to make this some new age G-Funk cookout classic but didn't really have the right idea of how to exectute it properly even with Paak's elastic range. It's like some of the songs feel lifeless and dull, luckily there are the features to inject some life into them. Listening to Bubblin & Till Its Over now gave me the idea the original direction might have been vastly different. Wish it was better but I still got some keepers on here; I'm still bumping the Q-Tip & Cole joints, Tints should have been the formula for this album's mainstream cuts and that jam with Snoop is exactly what Dre was envisioning for this album. Bring on Ventura, that's gonna redeem this for sure!
Mar 29, 2019 Like @Fire Squad said, the intentions were right. It just didn't exactly turn out they had in mind (I guess). There were for sure glimpses of Dre x Paak that I hoped for ever since they announced working together. I hope he takes those good things with him for the next one!
Mar 29, 2019 basically rt this, but to make my vote count ill add that it was a massive disappointment for me and Im almost never coming back to it. 6/10
Mar 29, 2019 When I first listened to this album, the every song was sooo fresh that I was in love with it. Production was really unique to me. It wasn't your average trap s--- ( even though I love trap beats a lot, it's overwhelming to hear nothing but trap beats in modern day hip hop so whenever I hear different hip hop beats it catches my attention eventually) Anyway, I have been a fan of Anderson Paak's sound since the beginning and even though the album lost its' replay value quicker than I expected, I still think it was good. I'd give it a 7/10. Bubblin' should have been on that album tho but I can see why he prefer to leave it out.
Mar 30, 2019 5/10 i really enjoyed a couple listens, then I forgot all about it the q tip joint was such a disappointment the chase, who r u, 6 summers and brother's keeper are, like, 7/10 songs but that's about it for me bubblin is better than EVERY track on oxnard

Talkin To My Diary Listening to Compton, you can almost understand why Dre never released Detox. The expectations were simply just too high. Billed as a soundtrack, Compton does a pretty good job of tempering expectations. It comes across more as a wide-spanning snapshot, rather than the genre-defining monument that Detox was supposed to be. I find it strange that Dre didn’t produce a single song on this album though. For such a lauded producer Dre’s been suspiciously quiet behind the boards. Nevertheless, the production on this album is good; a solid blend of Chronic-era funk, the futurism of 2001 and the banging pianos and bass of the 00s. Its even been updated with those skitterish trap hi-hats so prevalent throughout the 10’s. Dre’s flows also been updated to reflect his current crop of protoges (who are obviously ghost-writing for him). Just like the Chronic saw Dre adopt Snoop’s laid-back flow and 2001 saw him adopting the Shady tongue-twisters, Compton see’s the good Doc taking on the varying pitch and inflections of his latest protoge - Kendrick. If anything, Compton sounds a LOT like a Kendrick album. But a Dre album wouldn’t be a Dre album without the features. I love how Dre drew from different eras for the features - from Cube to Snoop to Em to Game to Kendrick and beyond (50 Cent lost. Also , where’s Kurupt Young Gotti?). A TPAB-era Kendrick is in particularly good form, while features from long-time collaborators Snoop, Game, Cube and Em all range from good to great (disclaimer: I actually kinda like that Em verse). Anderson .Paak is also all over this album and his voice adds a nice touch, especially in the obvious absence of Nate Dogg. While there are some incredible standouts and all-time Dre essentials (Darkside/Gone and Animals), the album as a whole feels… inconsequential? Maybe its just the expectations, the Detox hype and the 16 year wait. Maybe its the fact that Dre didn’t produce a single one of these beats or that after being THE innovator for so long, Dre just sounds… safe. I guess I can appreciate and understand taking the safe route, but I would have loved to see something a little different. Still a good album. I give it a 7/10. @RateThisAlbum
Apr 2, 2019 Release day and following ones were the best days I witnessed here. I remember I still couldn't believe when Dre said album was coming, but God d---, it came. Album still sounds good af imo, I love It and still listen to it to this day. Solid 9/10 from me. I'm still waiting for Detox tho.
Apr 2, 2019 Great album. I really like how he combined the more modern rap sound (Talk About It, Deep Water) with the vintage Dre sound (Gone/Talking 2 My Diary). His personal stuff on here was great. Satisfiction is literally the only song that I don't really feel that much. Animals and DS/Gone are 10/10. On top of that all the "newer" (A. Paak, Justus) delivered, but the old men did as well (Xzibit, Snoop, Em -yes, his verse was great-, Cube). Again, the best of both worlds combined. Not gonna lie I liked Kush, and Topless, and Popped Off (and the other detox songs) and I would still love to hear more stuff from that recording era, but Compton is solid and makes, imo, 3/3 for Dr. Dre. 8/10
Apr 2, 2019 i am a huge Dre stan so it will be hard for me to rate this I will need to get a couple more listens, I didnt revisit it for a while
