May 31, 2019 Skepta is really the only artist I can think of who's been able to translate the early 2000’s classic grime sound to an album format without changing it even remotely. Konnichiwa is gritty, real, and hilarious. Although I disagree with it being his best album, it’s still an 8.5/10
May 31, 2019 Skipping this round since I haven't heard it. But that new album sounded dope so will check this out anyway.
May 31, 2019 8.5/10 this really is a commendable album, my favourite thing about this album is how well skepta is able to match his energy to the aggressive sound of his beats this is one of my most loved UK releases from the past few years Favourite songs: Konnichiwa, It Ain't Safe, Man, Numbers, Lyrics
May 31, 2019 ah s--- I missed out on MBDTF. Its a 10/10. Perfect in every sense of the word. As for Skepta, I was just recently listening to this in preparation for Ignorance Is Bliss. One of the first modern era grime/UK rap albums that really got me interested in the UK scene. It birthed legions of imitators and renwed interest in the careers of the legends. I still havent got as deep into UK rap as I would like to (Especially sine I live here now lol) but this album was definitly a turning point for the entire scene. Shutdown! 8/10.
Jun 1, 2019 Alright just catching up to this, here's my ratings if anyone's interested Kanye West - Late Registration = 9/10 Spoiler Nostalgia overload with this one, he took the soul of the College Dropout and placed it next to an orchestra, courtesy of Jon Brion. Sonically this hasn't aged a bit, those added layers of strings took this to another echelon in comparison to what came out in 05 (at least anything else that wasn't produced by Kanye). Kanye still kept the fun and humor from CD and still expanded on it, his eye for features is also on full display as everyone dropped in a memorable guest feature--Hov, Cam, Nas on one album is overkill. The sequencing isn't as good as his other albums, but even that doesn't subtract anything from this masterpiece Lil Wayne - Tha Carter IV = 5.8/10 Spoiler I want to like this album more than I should, it was fresh off Lil Wayne taking the throne as the face of rap and trying his freak experiments with Rebirth and managing Young Money. Wayne's endless imagination started to show some signs of wear as he did most of these songs on auto-pilot. The songs where he did have that lightbulb over his head (6 Foot 7, She Will) are permabangers tho. f--- anyone that hated How To Love when it was popping. Future - HNDRXX = 9/10 Spoiler Just when doubts started to surface and questions being asked if he still had remnants of that fire he had during that 2014-15 run, Future comes out with HNDRXX. This s--- still sounds otherworldly to me, he's always been highly capable of fusing R&B with Rap so it comes to no surprise this is full of so many jams. It's become a quintessential summer album since it dropped. He sets the hedonistic tone with My Collection and ends exercising his demons with Sorry, he clearly still had a lot of venom that he needed to expel, but never again will it sounds so good as it did with this. Bonus points for one of the greatest reaction threads on this forums history when it dropped, good times... Kanye West - My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy = 10/10 Spoiler We knew Kanye was gonna bounce back after the Taylor Swift incident, but no way in h--- did any of us foresee just exactly how powerful those emotions would translate into masterful music. Each of Kanye's albums sound so unique for its time, MBDTF has some of the most incredible mastering and production value I've ever heard; every sound is so crisp and detailed, a lot of attention went into it. It's been 9 years and nothing comes close to putting me into a mood the way Runaway does. Needless to say, over this soundbed of baroque pop and extravanganza it's truly Kanye that shines; some of the most impassioned writing of his career takes place on here, he sounds like someone that doesn't suffer from insanity, rather he enjoys every minute of it. He accepts his role as the abomination of Obama's nation, so in each element that you can quantify art, this is very much a Mona Lisa of rap. It's a seminal albums in rap's history, from one of the greatest innovators and performers of all-time.
Jun 2, 2019 Actually the mastering on MBDTF is notoriously bad and one of the only legitimate criticisms I have heard of this album
Jun 2, 2019 Interesting, this is a new one for me but I do like different takes/learning something. I'd likely say it's deliberate raw effects to add a specific audio cue (say, Kanye's verse on Gorgeous, No.ID's drums on h--- Of A Life).
Jun 3, 2019 Tbh I don't mind it, but it's something I see mentioned a fair bit whenever this album is discussed.
Jun 3, 2019 Konnichiwa gets a 8.3 based on 5 ratings. Next up... Young Thug's Beautiful Thugger Girls @RateThisAlbum
Jun 3, 2019 Up through relationships it’s 10/10 The b-side is more hit and miss for me, but still has some great cuts. 8/10
Jun 3, 2019 This is, for me, Thugs 'HNDRXX'. On this album he experiences w other production/flow/sound etc. My favorite Thug song OAT is on this, For Y'All. Also songs like Take Care, She Wanna Party are in my top 10 YT songs. Beautiful album, and by far my favorite. Famili Don't Matter, Do You Love Me... almost every song on here >>> 9.5/10
Jun 3, 2019 Not my favourite Thug album, but the way he sheds his skin and reinvents himself on this album is amazing. The fact that he can still pull it off after so many years is testament to his genius. 8.5/10
Jun 3, 2019 9/10 No one can rap like Thug, but even this takes that whole concept into another dimension. BTG has him probably at his most haphazard, Im always mesmerized at how much vocal range & elasticity this guy has. The airy production & live instruments here are so refreshing, reminds me of how much commercial potential he could have had with the right management. Regardless, BTG is infectious with good vibes and an entire armada of incomprehensible flows/cadences, your life will transform after you hear For Y'all & Feel It. Oh & Relationships the best Thug x Hndrxx song oat.
Jun 3, 2019 There are a few sporadic mistakes on it like how Swizz Beats' chorus gets a little cut off on So Appalled and such but I've never had a problem with the mastering. Always thought it sounded pristine other than the deliberate rawness like you said.
Jun 3, 2019 6/10 look im not gonna lie this is in my lower tier of thug releases, its the first that never really clicked for me its not even bad, ive just never been into it like that i appreciate it for how creative it is in switching his styles Favourite songs: Relationship, Tomorrow Til Infinity, Family Don't Matter
Jun 4, 2019 pretty much exactly this. Definitely not bad just never been into it like that. Similar to HNDRXX, there is some of Thugger's best music OAT on this, I just prefer the Barter 6/Slime Season era Thugger. I'd give it a 7/10, still solid af.
