    Do you see yourself doing Web development for life or do you eventually want a change?

    Ever considered going freelance or happy working for company? What's it like? Long hours? Happy?

    Alright so here's my take on it.
    I finished college in 2011, freelanced for a little bit (fresh out of school I was extremely inexperienced so I wasn't doing much work), and then got a full time job as a web developer for a small agency.

    I've been working as a full time dev for 4 years now, between two different jobs. I've been at my current one for 3 years.

    As far as considering going freelance, I definitely have. The only downside to that is in my previous experience dealing with people directly, there are always going to be ones that don't want to pay, or don't see the value in our work, thus causing them to expect things for way under market value.

    As far as working for a company, I like my current job, although it's become pretty mundane. I find myself doing busywork more and more often, and fixing old legacy code that was written by someone else before I started working there. I like the people I work with, and my boss is cool as f---, but over the last year i've really started to grow a destain to the 9-5 grind.

    For overtime and long hours, it really depends on the agency / company you work for. At my current job, it's normal for me to put in 60 hours a week on average with all the stuff that I do outside of office hours. With a salary position, it's rare you'll get compensated for the overtime hours as well. This is the case for me because I currently work for a small shop, and we only have 3 dev's. We're currently growing and need to put in the extra work to ensure the company keeps moving forward.

    Now, on the flip side of that and my own personal experience, I have a friend that recently moved to San Fran and got a really awesome dev job working for a big company that builds satellites out of consumer electronics. He is able to work remotely if he wants to, and is making 75k/year to start (he also works much less overtime than I do). His job seems really fun, but i'm at the point where I want more.

    At the end of the day, it will really come down to what type of projects you enjoy working on (ie. mobile apps, websites, tools, web apps etc), and if the job you find allows you to work with those kind of projects.

    Sorry for the tl;dr, but that's my 50 cents.
