It's probably not the overall best movie of the year but I really really liked Gone Girl.

Wasn't a big fan, I'm afraid. Gyllenhaal is great and it looks cool, but I found it to be an underwhelming blend of 1976 classics Taxi Driver and Network, but lacking insight both as a character study and as a satire. I take it though that I'm in the minority on this one.

Hopefully we can still be friends :emoji_cry:

Listen Up Philip is an American klassik. Can't wait for Perry's next film with Elizabeth Moss & Katherine Waterston.

I don't think Inherent Vice is even playing in my province. Bummer, I really wanted to see that in theatres.

I'll admit that I was pretty frustrated with it too early on. It takes a little bit to get on its wavelength and to get used to its protagonist's toxic attitude and behavior. However, I don't believe it relishes in Philip's prick-ishness and, in this regard, I think the roles of Elizabeth Moss and Jonathan Pryce are crucial as they reflect the missed opportunity of his past and his potentially isolated future. Overall, I found the end result to be achingly sad.
I did...it's quite strong and would have been in my next set of honorable mentions. Very well directed and performed all around with a sharp critique of Russia's modern day corruption. If I have any reservations, it's that it is so unrelentingly dark and tragic that it inspires somewhat removed admiration more than it does an impassioned response.
