Feb 22, 2015 Forgot to respond to this last night, but I'm glad someone outside of people who post on the blog brought this up because I think it's an interesting discussion and we had a long back-and-forth about this before it got published. While @Narsh likes to keep things conversational, I personally try to avoid use of the first person in opinions pieces/reviews unless there's a specific reason why it's necessary, like if it's built around a relevant, personal anecdote. I think the lack of first person makes a review sound much more authoritative—you're telling the audience that these are facts, rather than just saying that you "think" this is true about something. I don't think the use of "I" makes Narsh's piece bad—far from it, a lot of people clearly took to it based upon the positive response here—but I'm in the same boat as @LasiK in that the style isn't really for me when it comes to review writing. For me, it makes it feel less like the editorial voice of sectioneighty and more like a blog post. I'm curious what others think about this. Sorry to throw you under the bus @Narsh, but this seemed like a good way to open up a dialogue with others outside of the @Writers (though yall feel free to contribute as well). Plus you've had enough published and are a good enough writer to know this ain't a diss. Also agreeing with everyone who says this grows on you. I didn't think I could give this more than a 7 tops at first, but it's slowly crept up to the 8-8.5 range for me.
Feb 22, 2015 The parts you and Lasik brought weren't even the same though, which is weird. Your comments were on the part about my 5-year old new balance sneakers etc hahah. @LasiK said something about the stuff about Birdman being personal conjecture -- when I linked to sources about the situation So while you know I get what you're saying/agree even though that's not the style I prefer to use, I actually don't even know what Lasik was talking about
Feb 23, 2015 Lol yeah, I wanted to read later and dropped that casual "like", then noticed that the blog isn't working for now, wtf?
Feb 23, 2015 Attacks on various websites, including ours, mostly likely by a closet stan related to @csw621 Nothing major was damaged tho, should be back up soon. Slyk, Hasman etc are awesome Awful timing though
Feb 25, 2015 Thanks man, well written review. I still don't like the tape as much but I see where you're coming from. Imo the first half remains inconsistent and most of the songs there are kinda forgettable, but the second half (and in general the better songs of the tape like Know Yourself) is far from throwaway material. Writing in first person is still a taboo, but I'm not mad about it. Based on the writer's opinion, people may notice some things on the record that they overlooked, or emphasise on different aspects maybe? If someone can express himself like this, it's fine for me, it helps the readers/listeners too; on the other hand, if they don't see themselves agreeing with the review(s), they'll probably take the next one with a grain of salt, so it's up to Narsh, in this case, to feel confident enough that he has figured the album/tape/song out. 3rd person is always the "correct" (and safer) choice, and you have to "earn" the right to use first person when writing reviews/articles etc, but generally I think that you have to do whatever works for you. It's up to the team to support this kind of freedom, or up to Narsh to work with a different style I guess. My two cents @BigCountry :insertcoffeedrinkingsmileyhere:
