Dec 26, 2014 MKG is a cool album bruh not in my top 10 of the year but i still gotta listen to it more
Dec 26, 2014 i like the yg album, it made me talk like a blood for like 2 months but that s--- ain't better than forest hills drive and i hate j. cole. the production mainly carried the album with some dope hooks here and there, lyrically he wasn't good enough to paint a vivid picture of what he was trying to get across on this album. (its a dumbed down, dj mustard version of gkmc.)
Dec 26, 2014 To me that YG album is going to go down as a west coast classic. It's the best showcase of DJ Mustard's production to date and the two of them rejuvenated that classic west coast sound that we all grew up on. He's not Kendrick Lamar lyrically, but he doesn't need to be for the most part. Even the serial name dropper Game was underwhelming lyrically on The Documentary, but that's not why its a classic (its a classic because of 50 Cent's hooks and Dre's production). Kendrick just set up unrealistic expectations for not only west coast rappers, but the entire industry. The Cole album is a very good project, and half the n----s on this site hated it before Cole even announced he had a 3rd album coming. @Narsh in particular has been going at people's necks for liking an album he hasn't even heard yet I bet no one on this site can make a good case to argue 2014 Forest Hills Drive is anything less than a 7/10 without going in to some insignificant specific details like 'I came fast like 911 in white neighborhoods.' The only weak points on that entire album are Hello, the credits on the outro and the second verse of Apparently. All that said, I like the YG joint more.
Dec 26, 2014 i agree to extent here but the game wasn't as bad as you make it seem lyrically, i thought he rapped well on the documentary. Those same people who knock bars like 'i came fast like 911 in white neighborhoods' would of went krazy if it was said on yg's album tho. (it honestly sounds like some s--- he would say) People like to be super critical of certain rappers but when you do it to another they defend it with excuses. I said i enjoy YG's album, it honestly surprised me but if its a rap album, i and everyone else should be able to judge it on that basis regardless of the he's not a lyricist excuse. (this excuse is being tossed around too much nowadays) I felt there were way too many songs on the album too, s--- got repetitive after a while for me. Everyone got their own opinion at the day tho
Dec 26, 2014 My Krazy Life is a really good album, wouldn't be in my top 5 though, probably top 10. FHD is like a low to maybe mid 7/10. MKL is like a low 8/10, wouldn't call it a classic though.
Dec 26, 2014 They didn't rejuvenate s---,lol. Sounds more like trap music than west coast. And how can a album that has bicken back being bool (or whatever) be considered a classic. And 95% of the words are n-----. Plus DJ mustard isn't all that great and his production is all over that album.
Dec 26, 2014 cuz bicken back bein bool is a classic song "95% of the lyrics are the word n-----" is an argument a white suburban mom would use. You can do better than that.
Dec 26, 2014 Soooo FHD is pretty f---ing good. There are still a lot of tracks off TSS that I love because of nostalgia but FHD is easily his best effort to date. As a concept album, it's not as high brow and some people make it seem, but he details the duality of his rise to fame well And it certainly helps that the production is f---ing fantastic. The Jazz elements to st. tropez >> Once again, the production outshines cole for sure, but this his best effort. Still can't belp but feel that he could've come more correct. Whether or not you guys want to admit it, some of the writing is still lazy. But the concepts are much more fleshed than usual and the album flows very well Cole comes off almost as corny as hopsin at times, and then genuine as Kendrick in others. It's emotional whiplash lol idk if Im a true fan or just a fan of certain aspects of cole Anyways, FHD is solid album and probably top 15-10 this year - which is a pretty great feat. There were a lot of incredible projects this year. I still can't condone it being in anyone's top five, unless you only heard 5-6 albums.
Dec 26, 2014 Mick Jenkins, Lil Herb, and Rich g--- put out better mixtapes than any album listed so far.
Dec 26, 2014 YG actually surpised me and I think alot of people with this album. Streamed it on Spotify and was like not bad YG, not bad
Dec 26, 2014 This is looking very well done and even more professional than what most publications are capable of doing so props to making this I can understand that YG's album made it to this list since it was a well executed project. The sequencing, theme and production are what carry the album imo however YG as a rapper doesn't exactly impress me. I liked it but I don't exactly rate it as high as a new west coast masterpiece, it's missing that memorable aspect that keeps me from going back to listening to it again...to each their own
Dec 26, 2014 Cole is not a great writer, me and @ODB been saying that for nearly 2 years now. Like ODB says, his flow often masks his penmanship. On this album, the only real lapse that stood out to me was the second verse of Apparently though. And then the moments that I didn't like Hello and the credits on Note to Self. Love Yourz is a song that I don't like as much as most either. But the strengths of this album outweigh most of the deficiencies. January 28th is great, especially this part: Like the great Rakim, when I make my notes You n----s might be L or you might be Kane Or you might be Slick Rick with 19 chains Or you might be Drizzy Drake or Kendrick Lamar But check your birth date n-----, you ain't the God Him and Rakim share a birthday (January 28th). 03 Adolescence is probably my favourite J. Cole song ever. That second verse was great. My favourite moment was this: I hit the boulevard pull up to my n----- front do' His mama at home, she still let em' hit the blunt though I told her hello, and sat with my n----- and laughed And talked about how we gon' smash all the b------s in class I complimented how I see him out here getting his cash And just asked, "What a n----- gotta do to get that? Put me on," he just laughed when he seen I was sure 17 years breathing his demeanor said more He told me, "n-----, you know how you sound right now? If you wasn’t my mans, I would think that you a clown right now Listen, you everything I wanna be that's why I f---s with you So how you looking up to me when I look up to you? You bout to go get a degree, I'ma be stuck with two choices: Either graduate to weight or selling number two For what? A hundred bucks or two a week? Do you think that you would know what to do if you was me? I got, four brothers, one mother that don't love us If they ain't want us why the f--- they never wore rubbers? And the way that A Tale of 2 Citiez follows this up is a moment too. The juxtaposition between the first and second half shows the character described in the first verse of '03 Adolescence versus what the city and culture makes him. I could go on, but its a great project. When it falls off imo is the last 4 tracks. Not to say they're bad, they're good for the most part (outside of Hello). It's just, like you said, 'he could've come more correct.' It's an 8/10 from me. It's Cole's best project since Friday Night Lights, not that he set the bar very high with his first two albums.
Dec 26, 2014 My Krazy Life has plenty of exceptionaly well written tracks. Some of you are so narrow minded
Dec 26, 2014 @Hasman one of my favorite parts: One day y'all have to decide, who you gon' be A scary n----- or a n----- that's gon' rule like me Keep it true like me,Cole you might be Like the new Ice Cube, meets the new Ice-T Meets 2 Live Crew, meets the new Spike Lee Meets Bruce like Wayne, meets Bruce like Lee Meets '02 Lil Wayne, in a new white tee Meets KD, ain't no n----- that can s---t like me! BLAOOOW
