Dec 27, 2014 Born Sinner only got one listen as well. My opinion on a j cole album always goes down after multiple listens so I might as well quit now
Dec 27, 2014 That's absolutely fine. All I'm saying is that you and a lot of others have a pretty strong opinion about an album that you've barely heard.
Dec 27, 2014 And in all fairness, j cole isn't something that's going over my head (and I've heard it more than once but I get what you're saying)
Dec 27, 2014 Your first hard listen was 24 hours ago fam, you were pretty opinionated about the project prior to that.
Dec 27, 2014 Anyways before this gets in to a back and forth, Cole may not deserve the number 1 spot, but that was a top 7 project of this year. I haven't really heard a valid argument against the album from anyone on this forum yet, but I wouldn't expect that much from a member base that migrated primarily from SL Enjoy your L courtesy of us at JCN though guys
Dec 27, 2014 Top 7 if you've only heard 8 albums maybe. What valid argument are you looking for? Just because people think cole a made a good album for once doesn't mean that it's suddenly one of the best projects of the year. Chill with that. Have you considered that one of the reasons I havent visited the album as much as you or the other cole stans is because there are NUMEROUS other FANTASTIC not just "oh that was actually good" albums out there that I'm catching up on? Smh there are so many similarities between cole's fan base and hopsin's (not to mention there were times during FHD that I actually thought hopsin might have ghost written some of the lyrics) None of this is spherically directed at you hasman - cept for the part about thinking its "top 7" lol
Dec 27, 2014 What are the "NUMEROUS" and "FANTASTIC" albums you're listening to? There have hardly been enough good albums this yr to justify listening to more than 10 let alone calling 10-15 albums good/better than FHD. If you listened to that many hip hop albums this year you are obviously waist deep in s--- music. Clearly J.Cole is not your type of hip hop. Its ok bruh. You're in the minority of saying that FHD is not one of the better projects of this year.
Dec 27, 2014 Even if I had only listened to 8 albums this year, I would at the very least feel qualified to speak on those 8 albums b. Maybe my list wouldn't be all the way accurate, but my opinion on those 8 projects would have some basis. It's been documented both in this thread and others that members on this site feel that listening, and I mean really listening to an album, is not considered a prerequisite to provide an opinion on a project. And that's not even directed at you so don't take that personal. That'll extend all the way to the people who were outraged that Shady XV wasn't nominated for this list. Again, this is not aimed at you personally so don't take it that way. But whether or not an artist has lyrical depth or complexity, 24 hours isn't enough to soak in a project. I paraphrase Hov's words here, but you can't listen to an album and review it in a day, that's just impossible. Even if you pick up all the words within the first few listens, the nuances and the instrumentation, what the album is about. That takes time to soak. People were asking why 'Be Free' (which to me is one of the best records this year btw) wasn't on the album. The answer is that it doesn't fit. If I asked them why it doesn't fit, they'd be lost for words. 2014 Forest Hills Drive is not a perfect project, but its better than what a lot of people care to admit. There's a stigma attached with J. Cole's music and that's been documented too. This was tweeted by the guy who reviewed this album for USA Today. His review (in which he gave it a 2.5/4) was published 48 hours after this tweet was made: And lastly, your point about Hopsin. While I don't feel qualified to speak on Hopsin's fan base, I just want to know what sample of Cole's fan base you draw the parallels off of. I've been following the guys career (and fan base) since 2009 and documenting it since 2011. Cole's core fan base consists of people who developed lofty expectations for Cole as an artist after he dropped 2 excellent mixtapes. While they were left disappointed after 2 lacklustre studio albums, they were pleasantly surprised with this one. These are the same people who make threads like "Count J. Cole's L's" and "Official List of J. Cole's Fart and s--- Lines". Same guys who dubbed J. Cole 'J. Snore' and Born Sinner 'Bored Sinner'. I say that to say that they don't take themselves or the artist too seriously. For the most part, they identify with and enjoy good music. 2014 Forest Hills Drive is good music period.
Dec 27, 2014 Cept I said I was a fan of his mixtapes, said I liked TSS more than most, and that this was his best project for sure. Not overrating Cole's album like you doesn't somehow mean you can assume "cole's not my type of hip hop." Hasman had the exact same discussion earlier about how just because he doesn't rank RTJ2 as high as me (EASILY better than FHD btw) doesn't meant he doesn't rate it. I don't have a type, I'm promiscuous like that. I f--- with all types of good music. Lol. Which includes FHD. If I wasn't on my iPhone id address the first part of your post in depth, but since I am I recommend you check out Life After Deathrow, Tin Wooki, The Water(s), Shyne Coldchain, h--- Can Wait. That should be a good start of other great projects from this year.
Dec 27, 2014 f--- outta here with that Young Thug bs, he makes hype music. That's all it is. Can't even believe you just said Cole would be behind Young f---ing thug and Rich homie quan.
Dec 27, 2014 With all that said, @Narsh has emerged as one of the better posters on this site since it was birthed. It was no secret though that SL had one of the worst member bases on the internet. Getting diluted by the members from JCN is the best thing that's happened to this site thus far. With the way we moderate and grow this site, the hope is that it'll only be diluted further with a better breed of posters lol. I mean, objectively speaking, SL was like a more mature version of TR Shady (and that's not saying much). That's why I retired from that site.
Dec 27, 2014 Lmao at FHD not being top 5 in this weak album year. I understand if you don't mess with Cole prior to this album, but this album is too strong to dismiss in that it provides the most variety of any Cole project ever so sleep jokes are pointless with this one. Album has a dope theme that he executes well and doesn't come off as forced. Plus he touches on topics that are so relative to life in America and the world period. He did good on this one. Still room for improvement though.
Dec 27, 2014 Fam wasn't it you who proposed WOAT ideas like an exclusive section for select netcees Get the f--- out of here
Dec 27, 2014 If I can't comment on FHD with athourity because I've only heard it a few times, what makes you think you can comment on Thug or Quan (two of the greatest and most prolific artists of the year) with any level of intelligence?
Dec 27, 2014 Whatever opinion you have on this list shouldn't affect what you thought were your own best releases this year. This was made to highlight and praise what were considered standouts throughout what a lot of outsiders thought as probably the worst year in mainstream hip-hop ever.
Dec 27, 2014 See what I mean lmao. If you guys don't want to look like stans stop assuming things. The only reason for someone not (over)rating an album as much as you isn't becuase they don't like them You're f---ing lost/deusional if that's your logic
