like that d00d said, gothic, but that's dated as s---. I can't really think of a decent example, cause nearly every open world game rewards exploring in some way, just that every time i play them i always feel like "this slight change would make this 1000x better"

I'll use red dead as an example too, cause of the chupacabro and the bigfoot thing, they aren't really the best examples, but its rare things like that are fleshed out in games/have more depth than some little s-----y easter egg.

like comparing diablo 2 to diablo 3. in diablo 2 theres was a low chance any enemy could drop rare s---. In diablo 3 everything drops s--- stuff and certain high level mobs/bosses drop rare stuff. so instead of grinding a campaign over and over with different characters and trying new things, you beat the campaign in an hour then spend 4 weeks killing the same s--- over and over for rare drops.

Witcher 3 has a pretty good system set up. like you turn level scaling on, so if for example you are stunting on fantasy setting europeans but walk into some s-----y cave with a monster, the monster will be on roids to match your level and stuff. that worked out alright cause you always had a challenge in game from start to finish. my only complaint with that system is that item drops often scaled with your level too so it was rare you'd find a weapon that was actually better than the s--- you already got.

Been hearing mad rumors about GTA 6 taking place in Houston.

Would be cool for me since I'm from there.
