Sep 17, 2017 so you're going to ignore the obvious (and 100% true example of the transformers series) in favor of jumping down this rabbit hole with eminem? he hasn't exactly fared well critically for awhile now. this is common knowledge. have they been panned? not overall, sure, but plenty of outlets individually have done so and he could still millions if his album dropped tomorrow without promo and pitchfork and a s--- load of other 'notable' critic websites gave it a 0
Sep 17, 2017 No you don't understand I'm not talking about movies that have an amazing looking trailer so people go to watch it and then it gets panned days later im talking about albums that people take a look at 20 years later because of how acclaimed it is. lol. okay man
Sep 17, 2017 Why? Because that's too good of an example that perfectly illustrates my point in this area? Alright Plenty of s--- gets trashed long before release on the mere idea of it and from the trailers and people still sometimes go out in droves and eat it up nostalgia
Sep 17, 2017 No because music and film aren't even close to the same thing. Nostalgia to a 13 year old kid?
Sep 17, 2017 they both get reviewed as media and are entirely subjective things potential nostalgia to the person recommending it to them, peer pressure on the kid to like it and have a positive opinion of it
Sep 17, 2017 peer pressure from words on a screen? Yes they're both media but besides that they're entirely different especially when it comes to marketing them. Look at Cudi, Album sales are down every year and yet his last album with 2 singles sold better than his critically panned album before that. Point is you agree a consensus is a thing, I don't really give two f---s if you like illmatic or not
Sep 17, 2017 Also nice try pulling the 'Eminem is panned and sells well'' Yeah the best selling rapper of all time sells well, how suprising lol and even relapse is his worst selling album behind mmlp2 lmaooo
Sep 17, 2017 Do you really think people don't feel pressure to 'like' what they perceive as popular? cause boi, that's a pretty obvious issue that crops up everywhere with everything I only agree there's a consensus among a particular group of people who might be polled for something but it's not representative of a whole and I absolutely will not roll with something being labeled "classic" based off any 'consensus', as it's a) incorrectly implying a level of quality on a subjective thing, when that's not how s--- works, and b) not actually a representative of everyone and therefore pretty worthless as an argument for 'quality'
Sep 17, 2017 Thanks? I mean, it's entirely relevant to that point and a good example, so of course I'm going to use it m8
Sep 17, 2017 It just proves my point even though thats not exactly what I meant. Relapse was panned and sold poorly lol
Sep 17, 2017 which was? in comparison to his other albums? sure, maybe (though it still outsold MMLP2, which received higher marks from critics and most fans), relative to other artists? no, not really, it still sold amazingly and peaked at #1, and even if it had sold poorly, there are other factors that contribute to that sales decline outside of any perceived quality or reviews from critics/fans (though I'd really like to avoid getting into "defending" an Eminem album and its sales rn lol, but just for example: the hiatus and stark difference between what came before and how long ago etc.)
Sep 17, 2017 It didnt sell more than mmlp2 which is my point, it should have given timing but it didn't
Sep 17, 2017 It's definitely the weakest of the 3 classics. Also I've never liked "if I had" all that much. Sounds like a drunken depressed rant, which it kind of is, but rock bottom captures the sadness theme much better musically. And I'm not gonna lie, when choosing to listen to an eminem album I almost always pick relapse over it. But i will not tolerate guilty conscience slander, that song is still amazing. Role model is top 10 em song. And I like all tracks bar if i had. My fault is also a bit sub par to what he was capable of at the time. Also has anyone else heard the clean version of my fault where the whole song is about pizza, that s--- is hilarious
Sep 17, 2017 Any review using the depressing millennial, Internet forum-using, armchair-music-critiquing term 'horrible' is automatically disregarded for me. Almost as bad as 'trash' in the f---ing Irritating As Fack terminology stakes. That point aside, reviewing a 20 year old album and saying it's aged is not saying much of any interest anyway.
Sep 17, 2017 Generally I disagree. Brain Damage, If I Had, '97 Bonnie & Clyde, Role Model, Rock Bottom, Just Don't Give A f---, As The World Turns, Still Don't Give A f--- are still okay to listen to tbh. The problem with SSLP is that Em's voice and instrumentals are deliberately "cartoonish" if you know what I mean. They are supposed to be a really clear contrast compared to the vile lyrics. Just play some of the classics before 2000 to someone who hasn't heared them yet. They are all outdated and don't sound good anymore. Some of them are bearable and that's about it. So is it still a classic? Without a doubt.
