    it doesn't exist. it's a meaningless term used by losers to describe a variety of different rappers they think are inherently invaluable (usually southern rappers) because it doesn't fit into the small box they've decided is "real hip-hop."

    Eminem’s songs about relationships might be the most cringe thing on earth and that’s not an exaggeration. They’re clearly 100% fiction and he hasn’t touched a girl in 20+ years

    Yup this is what I was about to post. Hip-hop's barriers have widened and morphed so much since KRS-1. In the 70s people thought recording hip-hop made it not hip-hop cuz it was supposed to be done live with a DJ.

    1) this is Asher Roth erasure!!!!

    2) Don't think your take on Future is fair. Future definitely leans on elements of R&B, but that's hip-hop now. He might sound alien compared to hip-hop from 2001, sure, but the genre has evolved so much since then. Any serious critical look at the genre needs to take that into account

    Who cares? His top 10 consists of rappers he grew up with mostly. Pretty sure he doesn't have Jay-Z in there either. Or Kendrick, and many others. Why does it matter.

    Whats influence got to do with anything? The reason everyone copies future is because it is simple, everyone can do it. Looking at the lyrics alone, which to me is the most important part, no one can touch eminem, let alone future. Its not like any random rapper wannabe can say "oh cool, I'll write like eminem too".

    Its like judging if someone is a brilliant in math by looking at how many others tried to solve a problem in the same way. The greats are always alone and standing out.
