Album is solid, but even the best beats on Missionary wouldn’t be considered in a conversation with any beat Dre’s made since 2001.

    A few reminders:

And this isn’t even including the mega singles like In Da Club, How We Do, etc. All these beats are timeless and sound fantastic to this day. I very much doubt the production on Missionary will hold up as well.

It’s a shame, especially since Stat Quo has reliably informed us that there’s hundreds (if not thousands) of classic early 2000’s era Dre beats sitting in the vault collecting dust.

And for anyone thinking that Dre just takes credit for the work of others, I encourage you to read The Making of Game’s Documentary, in particular the Don’t Need Your Love section.

Dre has been more than generous with production credits throughout his career.

I like Snoop a little more than you I guess. He's not a top tier rapper but I enjoy his music usually.
Not mad at most of these Dre beats either just that they gave 50/Em such a boring one.

Would probably give this around a 7 which is just, good. A few standouts like Fire, Thank You, a lot of decent/good songs. Nothing really bad.

Really wish Mary Jane had a different hook lmao because I love the rest of it.

@Ripper Roo I wasn't a fan of the singles either (minus Gorgeous) and think the em/50 collab is kinda meh too -for that line up- so you might enjoy some other songs as well!

Probably because Pharell (just like DJ Quik for an example) is a real musical guy and doesn't shy away from incorporating funk into his beats. Unlike dre, who loves to strip down music to keep everything as simple as possible.

Even to the point where it's mostly just drums ("Thank You" or "Gospel" being good examples, which had a lot more elements in their demo versions).

To be fair this criticism doesn't really apply to every song on this project though, because Dre used a lot more live instrumentation this time - probably a little more than he has in a long time.

Yeah, I knew Fire was gonna be a controversial pick, given that it was from the time when Dre was still in his prime. But I just couldn't stand it back then and still hate it now.

As for his current music.... I guess we have to face the truth: Dre's never gonna drop another great project. He's already 60, so it's pointless to hope he gon drop these ICU f---ers for a new team and will come up with a new sound, especiaclly since it usually takes him like 5-6 years to do so. But I'm fine with that tho, he had more than enough classics in the past so I'm good. At best, he's gonna drop couple of nice tracks here and there, like Lock it Up, ETA or most of Missionary (I liked about 70% of the album, which is surprising to me. Obviously not a classic and nowhere near prime Dre, but pretty good imo).

Btw does Dope count as something post-Compton tho? It came out after but we know it was an old beat, so it's not really fair

I agree with 90% of this, prefer the first beat on both Hard knocks and Sticcy situation and I would have Fire a bit further down the list as it’s not one of my faves (good song though!)… so yeah good review!

Regardless of the opinions (mine included) regarding the beats, Dre’s ear for mixing is still in a league of its own. Impeccable.

I didn't know it was an older beat. Any idea when it was from?

Also what was your favorite Dre era? Mel Man,Storch, Elizondo, D Parker, ICU, ect-

I expected more from Dre but much less from Snoop. His rapping is incredible on this. All in all, a very good album.

This album sucks. West coast hip hop is dead. Sad state of affairs

Last Dance with Mary Jane is up there with Sticky as worst commercial “hip hop” song of the year.

Method Man feature is the highlight…

I think it was rumored to be Game's Red Album leftover. I also remember 50 was talking about it in one interview that he wanted that beat for his album, which I assume was SKI or Animal Ambitions. I mean you can tell it was from his pre-Compton era by the drums tbh

Hmm, if we talking era then I gotta say my favorite is Batson/Parker 2006-2009 era. I feel like that's when Dre has fully perfected his style and I can't even express how much I love what he did on The Big b--- and The Blue Carpet. It's forever gonna be a crime we didn't get Detox full of Imagine/Boss' Life/Lost One/Don't Get Carried Away type of beats during that time. However, my favorite Dre project is still 2001, so I guess it's gotta be a tie between them and Mel-Man/Storch team. What's yours though?

The West is just Kendrick since Game and YG fell off, and Kendrick came back because of the Drake beef, cause his album before that s----d.
