So you could give a lot of positive arguments for mbdtf, less positive arguments for yeezus, but that doesn't make mbdtf a strictly better album?

Of course it is subjective. You can like what you want and if people say you have s--- taste, f--- them

However, there is a objective way to judge music for critics.

I honestly don't believe there is. What they're saying about albums (however thorough and articulated any of their argument may be) is still no less opinionated than anyone else's view of things

There aren't any standards set for them to go by or rules that exist for music that aren't derived from an opinion, even if all critics unanimously agreed on them they'd still be subjective opinions

Yeah but if your opinion is that something is better then well then s--- isn't subjective when something is better

I can't because I don't care about being a critic. I listen to music I love and I don't give a f--- it it's considered good by critics. I didn' t read this thread but that has to be answered by the people who think music is more objective

1000 percent subjective, its all in the eye of the beholder. The only point of critics is to get a different perspective from your own. They, by no means, have any more merit to taste than you.

I said there's no way you can say someone is the best rapper alive or that one album is better than another while you affirm music is subjective but apparently there is and I'm an idiot for not understanding that

I think I understand criticism is about saying what you liked and didn't like in a work and not about saying how great a work is

But then you shouldn't give a rating to an album or praise someone as "the best"

My opinion is if you can explain why you like something, your opinion is fine. You can go deep into certain songs etc but for me it has to sound good and lyrics are important to an extent. But the last few years I learned to care more about the sound and appreciated artists like Pitbull, Juicy J etc a lot more

It is subjective but there is a difference between somebody who knows a lot about a genre of music versus somebody who knows only about what has happened in the past 3 years. The former is going to have a more informed opinion than the latter. Music (Rap music in particular) is one of those subjects where the person who knows a lot more might not be taken as seriously as the lame hypebeast.

As far as critics are concerned, the number 1 critic should be the one listening to the music. We've already seen the effects of favoritism/payola/etc. on media entities (ie the history of The Source, blogs, etc). Listen to a project and formulate your own opinion. Don't let some trendy hipster tells you what's hot.
