    Stevie Wonder: ‘God is the Icon,’ But Kendrick Lamar is Pretty Great Too


    Most people would agree that Stevie Wonder is an icon—except, that is, Stevie Wonder.

    In GQ’s new Legacy Project, the magazine interviews Wonder, whose response to the very concept is to say, “Honestly, I don’t even know what that means. God is the icon.”

    Wonder goes on to show a savvy appreciation for current music. One of his favorites, it turns out, is a young Compton rapper.

    “Kendrick Lamar is extremely talented. But not only is he just talented; he has a real concern for the people,” said Wonder. “The good thing about the young is that they want to fix things.”

    But let's just say he has a point: Icons are supposed to be these fixed Mount Rushmore types, carved from stone and frozen in a heyday. They don't move. They don't change or grow. They probably don't become full-fledged vegans in their sixties like Stevie—he has become, late in life, a guy who meets you for kombucha. He's also a guy who will surprise you with his informed taste in contemporary music. "Kendrick Lamar is extremely talented. But not only is he just talented; he has a real concern for the people," Stevie says. It's at this point in our conversation that Stevie jams out to his own rendition of Kendrick's new single, "i," his braids bouncing into motion, the wattage of his huge smile going up a few notches as he uses all four limbs to tap out different rhythms to the song. He turns "i" into the Stevie Wonder version of Kendrick Lamar—as though everything that goes into his ears gets remixed before it comes out again. "The good thing about the young," he says about Kendrick, "is that they want to fix things. They don't want to fall into the same ol' bs." (Icons probably don't say bs, either.)
