Some members of the Los Angeles Police Department are worried the newly released Straight Outta Compton movie will hurt police and citizen relations in an already volatile time. According to TMZ, some officers on the force have expressed their opinion that the movie has anti-police themes that could compromise officers’ safety as well, as it depicts them as “beating machines.”

In the report, former L.A. City Councilman Dennis Zine, himself a former LAPD cop who headed up the Police Protective League, tells TMZ, “It’s a terrible time to release a movie like this. It adds fuel to the fire for hating cops.” Many of the officers think the film might interfere with relationships and bonds they’ve built in certain areas and are blaming Universal for the timing of the release. They believe they should have put the film out later.

The F. Gary Gray-directed biopic film about the trailblazing California group N.W.A. hit theaters nationwide yesterday (August 14). N.W.A., consisting of Dr. Dre, Ice Cube, Eazy E, MC Ren and DJ Yella, came to prominence in the late ’80s with their apologetically gangsta rap and socially conscious content. Their 1988 debut album Straight Outta Comptondefined the decade and their magnum opus “f--- The Police” is now as relevant as ever. The film, starring O’Shea Jackson, Jr. as Ice Cube, Corey Hawkins as Dr. Dre, Jason Mitchell as Eazy-E, Aldis Hodge as MC Ren and Neil Brown, Jr. as DJ Yella depicts the rise and fall of the legendary crew.

It was recently reported that theaters would be heightening security at locations that were showing the film.
