So this is something that's always been on my mind but I've never really understood the mind set and maybe the forums here can help me out. I'll give some background first here.

I'm a 20 year old guy from NJ, I love Hip-Hop/R&B, and the first real experience I ever had with it was probably White America by Eminem maybe when I was like idk, 12/13 years old, maybe a couple years younger since my cousins probably listened to it as well and they are about 3/4 years older.

Getting to the point here, living in my area of NJ (Predominantly White area, not to bring race into it but being a young kid in a mostly white neighborhood I get the average Rock/Country/pop not the Hip-Hop going on not the culture until the kids around got older and started to get into it as well and took off). I was never introduced to anything other than really Eminem until I got older(That same color skin thing probably had something to do with it--Thats not a secret as to his unreal success along with his talent) and was able to find more for myself. Lil Wayne helped as well (Back when he made d--- good music, Now I can't seem to get behind anything). But anyway, of course different families areas have different cultures and maybe parents/older cousins who grew up in the 90's listened and maybe introduced you to old school artists like 2pac, Biggie, Nas, etc. I wasn't, and you'll see where I'm getting at here. But here is my point of all this.

It seems that I encounter a lot of people (Not all) of Hip-Hop fans refuse to respect anything New school artists put out. Where people my age like 18-22 cannot STAND new school artists and never get behind anything that gets put out. They used to get behind guys like Wayne, Em, maybe still do, but when it comes to guys like Cole/Drake/Kendrick, they DESPISE any work they put out. I know people who praise everything Em has come out with, Stan all the way, Slaughterhouse stan too, but wont get behind anything those three put out. Or those strictly who listen to Biggie, 2pac etc and refuse to acknowledge what these new guys in the game are doing. I'm just curious whether anyone else has encountered the same sort of thing and I just wonder why those people or others you think feel that way about new school guys? And maybe if there are some older guys who grew up in the 90's can help with that as well.

I mean I wasn't introduced to guys like that until I was put on to Cole about 2 years before CWSS dropped by my cousin and I was really able to listen to guys back in the 90's and learn Hip-Hops past. It's personally never been my thing, but I respect what they did and obviously they are inspirations to new school rap today as well I just don't listen to that much and kinda stick to today's stuff. I'm just curious as to why there are those who refuse to give new school a chance and just get stuck on that old school 90's stuff instead.

Maybe it's a dumb topic it's just been something I have always wondered and maybe this forum can help get a discussion on that and why there is that sort of sentiment.

I have never heard of someone that despises Kendrick... sounds like you need new friends.

lol not even friends just people I went to High School with a few years back, I've seen plenty of it though and it has always surprised me and made me curious about that mindset. They hate everything those 3 I mentioned put out along with others but I use those 3 as the main example of who I'm talking about.

I hear a lot of people hating on the new school. But you name 10 rappers out of the new school and they don't know who your even talking about.

I'm older so my favorite era is the 90s (and to some extent, the early 2000s). I do support some of the newer artists but in general I listen to those albums that defined Rap in my lifetime. I haven't really noticed what you're referring to. Instead, what I've seen is that younger people want to hear newer artists, not older ones.

agreed, a lot feel like they Don't even give it a chance.

It's interesting because I feel like its surprising that I come across so many with that sort of mind set, I can understand if It is the era you grew up etc. but it feels like some just don't even give it the time of day and just hate. I've always been curious whether anyone else has seen that same sort of dynamic.
