Jun 28, 2016 HHTG, we literally all know that a rapid increase in a country's population strains it in some ways in the immediate short term. Everyone knows that. But let's not be naive here: The Leave campaign was able to win because they tapped into a deep, violent sort of racism and class anxiety. Sure, on paper, immigration laws might not be necessarily racist, but let's live in the real world here.
Jun 28, 2016 That's not an argument, since it wasn't used to argue a thesis. ... It's really not that simple.
Jun 28, 2016 I think that blaming it on racism is a weak defense and it doesnt paint the whole picture. There is a sense of nationalism here, yes, some may call it racism, but I dont think calling it racist helps anything or advances the conversation in any way.
Jun 28, 2016 Well youre claiming that ppl against mass immigration are automatically racist. Thats not true.
Jun 28, 2016 Tommy, you're grasping at straws here. Are there ways to frame hard-line anti-immigration as having little to do with race? Sure. Is that a realistic view to take of this? Absolutely not. I mean, dude, the guy who's leading the Leave movement went on national television the night of the vote and called it "a victory for ordinary people, a victory for decent people." That's elite level dog-whistle politics.
Jun 28, 2016 Yes but it was just a claim, not an argument, that's all I'm saying. I also never said that people against mass immigration are automatically racist, I know you usually say dumb s--- but you're going HAM right now.
Jun 28, 2016 There were definetely some racist moments in the leave campaign- most notably that UKIP poster. But, according to polls immigration was not even the main issue for leave voters with soverignity coming first.
Jun 28, 2016 Yes that's all I was doing. You initially just said my argument was weak and I answered that it wasn't an argument. If you said claim instead of argument, you would've said "that's a weak claim" which doesn't really make sense, so no, I'm not nitpicking, your original post just didn't make any sense.
Jun 28, 2016 I disagree. I think it's naive to pretend to know everybody's motives, hence why I have a problem calling people racist
Jun 28, 2016 well actually if you are arguing in favor of immigration, like you were doing earlier in this thread then it could have applied either way
Jun 28, 2016 I like how these wannabe intellectuals always say "I disagree" like the matter is some personal opinion type of s---.
Jun 28, 2016 You have a problem citing racism when this vote--and the proponents would admit this--was spurred on by the influx of refugees? You have a problem citing racism when Pakistani English citizens are being harassed in the street? You have a problem citing racism when the leader of the movement is speaking to "ordinary" Britons? Come onnnnn
Jun 28, 2016 Is anyone even remotely surprised by this? http://www.theguardian.com/politics...migration-fears-were-paradoxical-but-decisive
Jun 28, 2016 I'm not even necessarily talking about brexit, tbh. I was talking immigration in general. And the harassment goes both ways - some of the immigrants have been harassing the citizens as well.
Jun 28, 2016 Indeed, But at the moment of my original post which you quoted I just claimed "a big part of the people against immigration are racists". And it was also just my intention to claim that, not to use it as an argument. Just admit your post was kinda dumb lol
