He did well commercially. He always has, always will. I was primarily talking about creatively, I don't care how much he sells

Not Afraid, the inspirational anthem for janitors everywhere who feel a commanding jolt of rage every time they remember that Mom recently started asking for rent money.

Great review . I used to really enjoy Recovery but it hasn't aged well at all either as well as its other faults. Space Bound is still a great song from the album though.
Eminem also will never show any artistic growth. He simply is just way too immature .

On 25 To Life, ghost-written by The Village-era M. Night Shyamalan
    :drakelaugh2:

With the Dre-produced So Bad, over some celebratory “I’ve-had-sex-recently” horns, he pretends that he’s had sex recently

anyways, review was accurate , everything that was bad and good about it.
though im not sure if you realize but not every rap song intends to be artistic or narrative. alot of what Eminem did back in the day included mindless banter. as just a show of skill or something to have fun with. infact almost every rapper will make a song that has no serious meaning or implication. and that doesn't make it a bad song. Indeed you make mention to two songs which you though were relatively impressive. My personal problem is as you stated about Em not knowing what he is. quite the contrary, he simply was caught between being himself, and what he thought we would like, as well as the fact that he wasn't yet back to his prime. and so recovery is guilty of being lyrically 'average or mediocre' (which is very very bad for our standards of eminem), and lacks general artistry . But its still an ok album to me. i dont think it was trying to be spectacular. He wasn't intending to make another 'stan' (that would be 3 years later) it was him going in the direction he felt he needed to go (which you acknowledged, saying he got it right to some extent, but the execution was wrong). The problem as Marshall himself stated is that he really just wasn't at his prime, and he needed to 'reteach himself'.
Of course, im just a stan, so none of you have to actually take my opinion seriously, you can just insult me as usual, but id love to hear what you think about mmlp2
i think in mmlp2 he actually got it right. the choice of samples were questionable, but the rapping was a little on more on point, would love to hear your thoughts.

Recovery is light-years better than MMLP2. MMLP2 is by far his most average and forgettable album. Very disappointing compared to how good he was in 2010-11.

yeah - should've mentioned I do enjoy Space Bound and Seduction. They've got some s--- lines as well but they're far better than most of the rest of the album

First I recently read your write up of....3peat?... for the tha carter 3 joint review -- rly reminded what a top level writer you are. I know you guard your privacy wisely for the most part/have a real life, but you should def consider doing this more.. For real outlets.

Hard to disagree with your individual takes here. I think your assessment of eminems career arc is on point re: encore, the over correction etc. I'd grade recovery a little less harshly maybe -- C- effort, maybe a C. Forced album... soft and confused. But might might the best formula for em at this bit, considering he seems petrified to evolve in a way many of his contemporary have (if Kid Rock has lapped you musically, there's a problem)

Haven't played it in awhile but at least initially I enjoyed seduction, no love, and talkin 2 myself

    i dont get it?
everything swizz complained about here was corrected to some degree in mmlp2. MMlp2 seemed alot more authentic , ALOT more lyrical, had much better flows, larger highlights, and more creativity. Its in all ways a better album

MMLP2 was nowhere near as personal/emotional as Recovery. The only song that had any type of feels on there was Headlights, which was a great idea for a song, but fell very flat to me. MMLP2 had a lot of rapping about nothing and felt like a "mixed bag" whereas Recovery had a pretty similar theme throughout the album. Recovery had amazing production imo, it was great to finally hear him work with some outside producers and try some new things. MMLP2 was probably the worst produced album in Em's catalog. The Rick Rubin tracks (Rhyme Or Reason, So Far, etc) were some of the worst songs of his career. What a horrible experiment that was. If you want to create a nostalgic album that sounds like the first MMLP then you should be working with producers from that album (Dre, Bass Brothers, Resto, Eminem himself), not a guy that makes beats fit for the 1980s Beastie Boys. Long story short, the best song on MMLP2 wouldn't crack the Top 5 on Recovery.

disappointed that the first swizz review in years was wasted on a post-hiatus eminem album but the review was spot on nonetheless...terrible terrible album.

There isn't a single song on MMLP2 better than Talkin To Myself, Going Through Changes, Not Afraid, Seduction, No Love, Space Bound, or 25 To Life.
