maybe applying it to thug just takes more effort than you're willing to exert, especially when you know the ultimate "message" or "take away" wont be anything you find yourself wanting to revisit down the line?

That's actually my point. I don't think it's more excusable to include a s-----y pun just because it completes a melody or flow.
That to me is the definition of lazy writing, is it not to you?
If he said "well, this is a s-----y line, but lets include it because it works well with the melody/flow."
I definitely feel you about if being all about context, tho.
Dont get me wrong, I definitely do not discredit him because of these few lines. I just think they're worth a mention when talking about the project as a whole. I feel that way about any project.

I woulda talked about em for sure if I felt they brought down the project -- which I guess is what it comes down to, as you mentioned. I definitely acknowledge they exist though lol But there are artists from Danny Brown to Action Bronson that work in the same crass, unfiltered, manner as Thug.

@Narsh @WPG Y'all gotta use specific albums from this album to explain how thug is a good writer because I don't see it at all.

Definitely his worst attribute imo.

worst? sure, i can agree with that. but is it horrible like his detractors like to claim? nah, not really at all.

id say tracks like just might be, amazing, never had it are all good examples of good writing, no?

never had it's verse has everything -- interesting imagery, humor, punchlines (on top of being so well executed). just might be is technically undeniable. amazing is a love song. knocked off is pretty dope too, especially the hook (baby we gettin' married in February, etc)

it's just different than what people have been engrained to think is "good"

That was a great read @Narsh, I'd probably give the project a 7.8-8.3 something in between that score. I definitely agree that for other non-Thug fans it's an easy listen and a window into his world/skillset. It maintains a consistent sound and is relatively easy to sit through since it's length is honestly perfect. I think I'm somewhere in that boat of uncertainty when it comes to gauging how exactly good is he as a writer? Theres moments of brilliance along with moments of madness that I hear in some of his lines, in that regard I think it's where RHQ was instrumental in making Tha Tour Pt.1 great since he added his own writing that "masked" whatever you consider as deficiencies.

The uncertainty will fade the more you get acquainted with his material. loose tracks, earlier projects, etc. Quan's an underrated writer too for sure. In general, Id still definitely take Thug over him every time
