Jun 16, 2017my mate reckons it's called 4:44 because it's a ratio. and the ratio 4:44 or 1:11 is actually pointing out that Jay Z's lips are 11x bigger than a normal human's

This 4:44 campaign did its job by getting people talking. People found out that it was linked to TIDAL and the immediate speculation was that it must be a new Jay Z album. But then a trailer was released and it was confirmed to be a film of some kind. Some still hoped that a Jay album could be the soundtrack and it looks like they might have been close.
Sprint confirms album dropping June 30.

Some scattered thoughts regarding my first impression:
Jay definitely has a lot to say on this album about being black and how it affects his decision making as a millionaire business mogul. He talks about supporting black businesses like Diddy's Ciroc, he ties his own various business ventures like Tidal into that idea, he ostracizes OJ for rejecting the label of black, and those are just a few of many instances. The Story of O.J. is basically Crack Commandments for being a 1 percenter. He urges young black artists not to sign deals or get finessed for their master recordings. He even deads the hostility between them and their rap forebearers with that line about Pac.
He brings up pretty much every skeleton in his closet on this record. He talks about shooting his brother, cheating on Beyonce, stabbing a record exec, his grandfather molesting his aunt, and tons of other baggage that has accrued over the years. I'm not sure I've ever heard an artist do that to such an extent. He doesn't make excuses for any of it really. Just contextualizes them as ways in which he's grown and how he's learned from his mistakes.
The things that tie his past and his racial identity together is that this is an album about sharing his wisdom. It's really an old man album for the young man to listen to. Just wish it was more polished musically. -

i like this album because it feels like hov breaks himself down and humanizes himself while still assuming the role of the culture's all wise father figure.
on songs like family feuds and the story of OJ he's like a zeus like figure in the clouds sharing his unfiltered thoughts on the culture with intention to steer it. so like listening to those tracks you respect him as such.
but then on tracks like k--- jay z, 4:44, or even legacy, he breaks himself down and humanizes himself. either speaking personal, or admitting faults.
album is excellent to me.Steviewonder322, DKC, jewtheiii and 7 others like this. -
