The thing about studying abroad in the USA—I was talking about this with @Coco the Vageater @Papa Andy and a few others—is that the USA should really be like 10 different countries culturally, so you're gonna have a hugely different experience if you studied in, say Seattle (where I live) vs. Houston (where @Sign Language lives) vs. Boston (where @Papa Andy lives).Ordinary Joel, lil uzi vert stan, RG9 and 2 others like this. -

Oh, I've already talked about this a little, but I'll elaborate some here.
I spent 4 months in Nagoya, Japan in 2013. Easily one of the best 4 months of my life. I went on an intensive language program and took full-immersion Japanese language classes with no English, which were pretty hard, but the nature of the program made it hard to fail (it was Pass/Fail).
I was always kind of a nerd so I did the studying I needed to do, and I didn't wanna waste the opportunity to develop my language either so I took the classes kind of seriously, but the time I invested in to classwork didn't hamper my freedom to explore, party and drink at all. It was amazing for me because I had never lived outside of Missouri before. Nagoya was the biggest city I'd seen in my whole life at the time.
I'll never forget my first experiences with "all-you-can-drink" Japanese pubs, knocking back 15 beers/whiskey sours in as little time as possible, playing deadly drinking games with my Japanese roommates with 4L of sake, seeing the autumn festivals in Kyoto, the magic of convenience store food. So many firsts. It plays back like a dream in my head.
I definitely romanticized the memory of it to a pretty extreme level, which I think is a normal thing to happen to people who have lived abroad (especially if you have lived in the same old place your whole life). After I returned, I was really depressed and I constantly wanted to just go back. So in summer of 2015 I moved here for work after graduating. And the magic was gone. It's still a great place, theres almost nowhere I would rather be, but its very familiar now. Nothing beats that first rush. I feel like everyone should study abroad if they have the opportunity.Ordinary Joel, Sign Language, DKC and 2 others like this. - Jan 1, 2026

Agreed - I had a choice to either double major or study abroad. I opted to dbl (I was also probably scared lol)
That said one summer i nearly did a semester at sea where you learn to sail and go port to port. Instead I got an internship at the baseball HOF woooo

Did you study abroad while in college? Do you plan to study abroad? If so, how was your experience?
I'm probably gonna do a summer program that sends me to Beijing.yungkanata, Ordinary Joel, lil uzi vert stan and 1 other person like this.Jan 1, 2026(This ad goes away when signing up) -

I’ve always wanted to study in America for some reason, but I think it’s quite expensive anyway
Would consider doing my Masters abroad though if the right opportunity came. Would be pretty cool I think. But it’s a lot easier to just stay where you’re comfortable unfortunatelySign Language, Ordinary Joel and DKC like this. -

Out of Europe I'd like to go to Spain or Portugal but I'm not really attached to going to Europe for any reason. I'd like to do more traveling outside of the US in gen. Would love to go to Peru, Morocco, Australia, Indonesia...I'm honestly not picky. I've been to UK/France/Costa Rica/Canada/Mexico but I haven't been out of the country in like 10 years. Have yet to do any sort of abroad trip as an adult.Ordinary Joel, lil uzi vert stan and Sign Language like this.Jan 1, 2026(This ad goes away when signing up) -
