I just can't agree with this notion that Fantano isn't a good critic or that 'he shouldn't be paid attention to' s--- that Theg says in every thread.

Do I agree with him every time? No. He gave my favorite album EVER a 6. But I respect the work that goes into his profession and the fact that he's one of the best at it.

He is articulate and I don't think he's as terrible as some people do, but I do think he misses the boat on reviews a lot, especially with contemporary rap. I just think saying he puts his thoughts into words better than any other rap critic is kind of a ridiculous notion (especially when a better professional rap critic literally posts on this site, plus I think quite a few posters here are better rap critics than he is).

Fantano's biggest success is that his brand is almost literally himself. He's meme-able, kinda weird-looking, and you literally look at him while he reviews so he's a memorable presence. There are tons better rap critics out there that don't have that type of presence because they write for a multitude of sites, and the brand for Pitchfork or Complex or whatever isn't a specific person. One thing I do respect about him is that he isn't tied to the politics that most media sites are because it's just him (idk what kind of deals he has), so he's free to give whatever score he wants without anyone holding him back.

    That's subjective

I don't believe I've seen a more enjoyable or better video-based critic which is how I like taking in music content

And so is saying he puts his thoughts into words better than any other critic. I just think that's a pretty steep assertion when there are tons of great rap critics out there.

lol people really think Fantano is s good critic. His reviews for other genres are okay I guess, but he’s super out of touch with hip hop/the culture. His knowledge of rap stops at about 1994 and he’ll dismiss anything that doesn’t fit in his weird box of what rap should be.

A lot of these ratings are laughable lol

He might not be a terrible music reviewer, but his taste is absolutely terrible
