Nov 11, 2017Full Disclaimer- I'm not a professional music critic and I've never pretended to be one. I'm just a guy who has been extremely vocal about Eminem over the years and for whatever reason some of you guys care what I think so here I am.
Anyways, I was originally going to hold off on listening to WOW and listen to the album in it's entirety knowing absolutely nothing about it. That went out the window shortly after it's release yesterday when an old friend texted me "Beyonce lol?". At that point I said f--- it I'll listen to it.
Eminem has put me in a lose/lose situation as a fan with this song. Look, I spent 5 minutes listening to an extremely honest Eminem acknowledging a lot of the shortcomings and problems myself and a few other fans have had with him over the years. While his honesty and all that is great and I really do wish I could appreciate it.... at the end of the day the entire song was full of these EXACT SAME mistakes that he is talking about. Delivery, flow, ect.... It was just an extremely awkward and clumsy song from a technical standpoint. I don't know how else to say it but it sounds like he forgot how to rap. He sounded like s---. Maybe he meant to? Maybe that was the point of the song and the rest of the album will be incredible. I doubt it but I also have a tough time believing that he really lacks that much self awareness. As for the content, again, I appreciate the honesty but I don't really see the point. A small part of me felt sorry for the man but a large part of me thinks he sounds like a whiney, redundant, beta p----. He's covered these topics(regret and retirement) before and has done it better. And, he did it over the course of a bar or two. Not an entire f---ing song. "f--- my last CD/That s---'s in my trash" and "what am I gonna do when the rage is gone?/And the lights go out in that trailer park?/And the window is closing and there's nowhere else that I can go with flows" come to mind. Done and done. I'm at a point now where I just don't want to f---ing hear it. I want him to do something about it. I want him to be a God d--- stoic. Like, great, you're finally aware of all of the "missteps" you've took now go f---ing fix it and make some awesome f---ing music. Oh well.
With all that said, I don't hate this song. I'd put it a tier above ANYTHING from MMLP2 and somewhere below songs like Fine Line and GOF. I've listened to it 4, maybe 5 times and that's more than anything from MMLP2. I mean there are still songs from that album I never finished for f---'s sake so I'll take this I guess. As for the rest of the song Beyonce was really out of place and I'd have preferred maybe Elton John or Eminem himself. However, the production was great which was a HUGE surprise considering each and every Eminem/Rubin song from MMLP2 was a complete and total unmitigated disaster. So, yeah, while I don't hate this song but I can't really praise it, either. I still have a little hope for this album and I do believe it will have a gem or two on it ala Recovery. We could still get his best post-hiatus album so far. Then again, maybe we won't. That outro was scary to say the least. We'll know a week from now.
If Shady Records is watching I encourage you tell Eminem that going forward, if he does go foward, M Solo said "Eminem, don't tell me how rough the waters are. Just bring the f---ing ship in."

Current thoughts-
Poorly executed but still one of his better post-hiatus songs.
If there was ever a song to freak out and push an album back for- It wasn't this one. His best lead single since Without Me.
Hope the album was just delayed and not changed. If this song was an indication of where the album was headed I'd be thrilled.
It would have been so much better with Eminem himself doing the hook or somebody like Elton John. Beyonce throws the whole thing off.
The outro was really out of place and really, really bad.
Lastly, I'm sorry I was so harsh Marshall. I'll do better a better job of remembering that you'll never be what you once were and just try appreciating your bright spots going forward. This was one of them. Please release the album. Thx.

I think it's a really solid album with some classic songs on it. Space Bound and GTC are perfect top tier Eminem songs imo. Talking To Myself, You're Never Over and Seduction are very, very good. The rest of the album for the most part is really enjoyable to me. The only songs I actually dislike on that album are On Fire, Won't Back Down, LTWYL and Untitled. The rest is by no means perfect but its something I really enjoy(that said it's something I don't really revisit all that often.) -

Being objective I'll lleave GOF out of the equation but I'll take Deja Vu, Airplanes 2, Cocaine, Space Bound, GTC and The Warning over anything else post hiatus. By a really, really, REALLY wide margin. -

This thread reminds me of how frustrated Em must be...NOBODY can agree on what songs of his post hiatus are good to them lol. You literally see fans list top 5 and worst 5 and the next person will be exactly the reverse.Dread or Alive, Don Marshall, Z Gangsta and 4 others like this. -

The song will pay off when we find out the very next track he redeems every flaw he mentions. Like the song is an intro "let me get this out of the way first". The album wouldn't be called Revival if it was the same old thing and he learned nothing. And Eminem flows great on Southpaw Soundtrack, you don't just forget how to rap one day. If he could flow on Relapse and that was after years of being out of order, you don't just lose it the next day. At worst he's guilty of experimenting with stuff that in hindsight weren't good.afghaniStan, vi.le, DetroitDGAF and 3 others like this. -

The bridge on GOF>>> I don't know I just really like the whole song. And I remember making a thread shi--ing all over it before it came out because I thought it was the most God awful title of all-time. I still have it in ITunes as "Too Late To Start Over" lol.
This post made me go listen to Bad Guy and Deja Vu. I still think Bad Guy sucks. I hated the ending because of the clogged toilet/backing s--- up line and to be honest the rest of the song concept was just incredibly corny. MATTHEW MITCHELL b---- I EVEN HAVE YOUR INITIALS. Great beat, great chorus but terrible idea and execution. Should have been I Just Don't Give A f--- Part 3 if he wanted to do a sequel. Listening to Deja Vu it's actually pretty God d---ed amazing he didn't have a song killing line in it because the opportunity was there and hebwas definitely flirting with it. But Jesus he needs to do his own hooks again. -

It amazes me we can get him sounding/flowing fine, with decent (albeit tired content) on his recent P!nk feature... and then on his own first single for his first album in 4 years, we get this s--- show.
It's unbelievable. -

I kinda understand where you’re coming from with the fact he’s been here before with Guts Over Fear and such. But the thing is songs like that didn’t reach a wide audience. With this it’s his first single featuring Beyoncé. Everyone at work today was talking about this song. I don’t remember a single person I know talking about Guts Over Fear when it came out. And this is a better song than GOF imo. With this the message gets across much better. About how he knows he’s never going to please everyone but he’s just going to do what he feels is best. Plus the end of the song strongly implies that the rest of the album won’t be like this.Buddha, Ezio926, hustleandcuss and 2 others like this. -

Agree with op entirely. And good to see someone else that sees bad.guy as the trash that it is. The first 3 verses are garbage and the last one is good, but is by no means.flawlessCynic, MWT, Buddha and 1 other person like this. -
