I think mainly because of how predictable this looked and was again.
Recovery started that format. Then he sprinkled some on MMLP2, then he continued it in 2014, 015.... I think Eminem fans or even casual fans who sometimes listen to Eminem are just sick of hearing that [insert angry Em verses about fame and his status, or love in between pop/poop hook here] s---, over rap rock or pop rock beats.
So when Walk on Water dropped and it was... not that format exactly but still a huge female singer ballad hook for the sake of it, again, I think a lot of people felt like 'here we go again'. Then comes the tracklist and it's just like 'f---ing yawn'.
For once - Em was really predictable.
No matter what he did before, I'm not saying all content was surprising but his presentation always was. Like when he burst back in MMLP2 era with that Berzerk ad and blonde hair... He always found a way where it felt like 'whoah. Wasn't expecting that - wtf is this album gonna sound like??'
It didn't feel like that this time. Because of the above. He went full ham with the pop and core fans I think were like 'f--- this' and more recent fans even maybe younger fans who came in on Recovery were probably like 'really? Again?' It felt predictable and worn out. And it was. I can't believe he was happy to do it. -

I don't think the Trump diss had any effect on his sales -

This is his chance to "revive" himself from the mountain of criticism he'd been garnering with his diminishing quality of music, but instead he did the exact same s--- again -

I'll say not being active for 4 years. Nobody cares about south paw movie or that bodied tv show so he cant use that as being busy. Not even the shady 15 album is worth a listen. Exclude that from the 4 years, and he's been shut off completely, which is what fans truly feel. The album rollout was great at first; keep the medicine theme alive. More promotion of it and more hints with new music would've been great. The website is what f----- em and paul in the a---. You could do magic with a .com domain. A website could've been everything for this promotion while still making money off it. They could've used it for new hints, new music samples, and album tracklist and cover. Everything would've been on that website after it was teased all over social media. The guys completely forgot about it and left it to rot. Eventually they'll take it down once it ends. Imagine putting out new video on it with new music on the background. or the tracklist with the same theme - that dr note or even the colors of it. Or maybe a video of dr dre in a dark room, in a shadow prescribing new "medicine" for em. It could've been great and I thought that's what they were going to do. Something or someone changed the course of it. I truly believe em changed the whole theme of the album as a late scratch, hence pushing the album back til december. If they would've kept the theme and release date in november, this album would've been a huge success. I think there are songs where he quickly just made to fit a new theme of "speaking to everybody". and I call that bs by the way. Was that Marshall himself or Paul, Interscope, or even government not allowing him to continue because it was right on point.? -

Em basically telling us we are annoying as Stan to him. Guess Stan just drove his car into the lake before buying the album.

Kinda sad in a way because I do like the album. I just felt underappreciated for being a fan this roll out. -

It was definitely a combination, the rollout killed the hype early on, his fanbase is split and it feels like he's trying to appeal to his surface fans instead of his down to earth fans that somehow are still fans after he fell from grace with Encore -

I'm still convinced the rollout was purposely silent. No way in h--- anybody without brain damage would not drop the singles with the biggest pop stars on the planet first. I'm convinced Em no longer wants the attention and only works with artists he respects. -
