Well they are both technically wrong in many aspects. Eminem was using reverse psychology at the time, saying he wouldn't rap until he was a grandpa. He came back and later declared he was going to rap until he was fossil fuel. A direct jab at Benadryl and also a way to mess with his psyche. Benadryl offered up a written peace treaty which was a mistake in the first place, similar to the Paris climate Accord. Like trump, Eminem refused to sign it knowing that on his last album he was gonna take some shots at Benadryl and make amends with Trump. He made allusions to these future jabs on Revival. "I like to grab snatch like Donald" showing he actually does support trump and the "I'll karate kick the plaintiff and throw ninja stars at the judge" showing direct jabs at Benadryl when they go to court. Interesting topic indeed.CavalierTD, Xmipod, Buddha and 5 others like this. -

Benzino is literally a sub rapper and will not be remembered in 5 years.
Eminem brought Hip Hop into the mainstream.

*professes love for rap and constantly talks about being student of the game*
*his whole shtick is he's obsessed with being the illest mc*
*made a career off of dissing pop stars and weak lyricists*
*has a full length Pink track on his album*
*Uses most blandest default radio rap production despite having close relationship w/ Dre and Alchemist, as well as the ability to work with anyone at the snap of a finger*
*no rapper features, instead Skylar Grey Khelani and Pink on every record*
He's such a hypocrite and sellout it's amazing that no one draws attention to it-- he and Paul must've carefully planned this out since Recovery to desensitize people to the proverbial middle finger in their face and d-ck being shoved up their a--- whenever a new record comes outBuddha, BIGFOOT, Guma and 1 other person like this.(This ad goes away when signing up) -

Nothing is more disappointing than him constantly professing his deep love and respect for hip hop, only to turn around and release an album aimed towards soccer moms and dads and their kids, where each person can have their own personal favorite song, so the entire family can listen to revival on long summer road trips to the lake house.Awfullyhotcoffeepot, Big Dangerous and Empire State Of Mind like this.(This ad goes away when signing up) -

First of all, when he initially rapped about killing his wife, let's say in "97 Bonnie and Clyde"... that was a great show of storytelling. Just from a writer's standpoint and also as a concept - to express love for his daughter, hate for his wife... at the same time, and tell a story which is violent and disturbing, yet funny, detailed, clever and through baby talk? That's brilliance. That's not shock rap.
So it started from some genuine expression of his and some anger, from his childhood and just being ignored, bullied etc. But then he took the misunderstanding of his 'in-character rhymes' and 'go anywhere with your thoughts to express rage at the world' and embodied it (MMLP), he became what critics thought he genuinely was - realistically, and then used that to feed some more utterly brilliant conceptual rap, like of course "Stan" and "Criminal".
Em's best work is too smart to be dimissed as shock rap. There's far too much to it. For example on MMLP, he might be saying violent things or 'shocking things', but he then almost always has a 'wink' right after it, or is making a larger point for example about bad parenting, hypocrisy of American media or politics etc. - That's not shock rap. Shock rap is just say anything for no bigger reason, just to say it... and just to shock. He used violent imagery and concepts for bigger purposes.
Then - leaving all of his violent concepts and all of that aside, how is "Till I Collapse" shock rap? "Lose Yourself"? He has done much more than just provoke. "Lose Yourself" is a great example too, how many rap songs do you know which feel that BIGGGG and which transcend everything, all genres, yet are so authentic... so uncompromising, so smart? - the hook game too; that hook feels HUGE, it's legendary. How many HUGE rap hooks like that, which felt that electrifying were there before? He's analysed himself, he's written about anxiety and fighting against the odds - big themes, big universal and inspiring themes, you act like all he's done is say shocking (for whatever reason) things.
He's not anything wrong with rap. Well, maybe now, with his trash sell-out s---, but in general - what he has done for rap is take many aspects of it to previously unseen levels - rhyming, flows and more importantly - the intelligence of writing; his self-deprecation, self-analysis, his wittiness, his social commentary, his storytelling and just from somebody who appreciates great writing... outside of rap, outside of everything - the way he has put words together is unique. Rap would be far worse off without Eminem's contribution.thunderface, Z Gangsta and Backroad Bobby like this. -
