Sep 24, 2018 It can sound dissimilar to the Slime Season tapes without being a masterpiece. It's a good album. It's probably in the upper-middle of his discography in terms of quality.
Sep 24, 2018 I agree with the latter. That isn't a huge statement for me tho. Barter 6 is still my fave project of his. It doesn't sound exactly like a lot of the music on the slime season tapes but to say it sounds nothing like them is a gross exaggeration. It sounds similar enough that it's a turn off for me. The production is slightly different but still pretty similar to a lot of the songs on those tapes but honestly... it's pretty good. I like it. but only about half of it stands out for me... and on a 6 song album... that's not the best. I think Climax is my fave song after a couple listens
Sep 24, 2018 The only song I really thought really sounded like that era of Thug was the intro. Listen to Climax especially, that s--- sounds nothing like a slime season song.
Sep 24, 2018 I loved his earlier work. But the thing is without bars i can take so much before im over it. Its almost not rap tbh Sadly mainstream rap is coming to an end
Sep 24, 2018 Agree. On The Run is also the most like those songs. Climax is the furthest from them (maybe why I like it the best). The others are more in between but too alike for me personally. As I said tho... if you LOVE young thug you'll like this a lot and appreciate the slight differences more
Sep 24, 2018 It's definitely genre-bending, but I'd argue it's rap for sure. Rock has tons of defined subgenres because it had decades before rap existed to develop them. Rap is really just starting to blossom in that way, but people are a bit more resistant because anything with rapping has been defined as "rap" for so long when there's so many different styles...it's like defining anything with a guitar as rock even though there's so many different sounds and styles.
Sep 24, 2018 Classic album How i feel about rappity rap is exactly how Isis feel about infidels This is proper music here from Thugga, a proper album
Sep 24, 2018 I think u just have to appreciate different types of rap for what it is. I used to not like thug or future type music until I pulled the stick out of my a--- and got over the “every rap song must have amazing rhymes or it sucks” shtick. I don’t listen to thug to hear great bars (although he still has some), the same way I don’t listen to Eminem to hear great melodies and hooks
Sep 24, 2018 I agree with you for the most part, but I think an important part of learning to enjoy these other artists is also appreciating their writing styles as valid. I get what you mean by "bars," but I think Thug is a great writer in his own right. It's just a different style of writing. Like no one reads Stephen King and judges it the same way as they judge Thomas Pynchon. It wasn't all that long ago Lil Wayne was considered a poor lyricist by many.
Sep 24, 2018 I was thinking about this yesterday. Someone said to me that we're in the golden age of Hip-Hop. My knee-jerk reaction was to think "f--- no" but when I thought about it... it made sense. I don't think this is the golden age right now but it's certainly getting there. I think there needs to be more of a balance in the content (as in what's being said on records... there's just a little too much ignorant s--- rn). The way music evolves is fascinating tho and isn't something you can truly appreciate or understand when you're younger. The amount the genre has changed in under a decade is wild. Yes, you can go back and listen to old albums and see the difference... but when you really see it evolve in real time over several years, it's crazy. The amount of experimental Hip-Hop albums coming out rn is insane. I guess this is what happens when it's the biggest genre in the world. Definitely makes you excited about the future and what's to come.
