Tropical Malady his most magical to me, but nearly all of his films are masterpieces.

Dug it? I didn't know what to make of it walking out of the theater, though I eventually came down on its side. The movie flirts with a number of genre elements and narrative threads without ever wholly committing in any direction, all while maintaining this quietly melancholic tone and cryptic atmosphere.

The extended attention given to texting (too much for some viewers) is interesting and I think suggests a little bit of what Assayas is getting at. At the time in the film, the unknown texter could be a threatening stranger, the ghost of her brother or just about anyone, but the protagonist's experience with this person is nonetheless the same; he/she is just words on a screen (The texting also does set up one cool scare). This falls in line with many of the character's other interactions, as she receives tasks from her boss via messages left in her apartment and communicates with her boyfriend through Skype. Presumably they're living and breathing human beings, but their presence in her life is not much more than "ghostly" (In his own way, Assayas uses the supernatural to highlight the unique sense of loneliness brought upon by the modern world in a manner loosely kin to Kurosawa's Pulse.).

This, I think, is part of broader ontological study into its character, which comes to full bear in the sequence where she tries on her boss' expensive clothes and tries slipping into someone else's persona (During this scene, she is also asked bluntly by the texter, "Who do you want to be?"). The last lines of the film are likewise in this vein and I found that the ending scene overall had a deceptive emotional pull, thanks in great part to KStew's stellar turn, one that's often uncomfortably unnerved.

@Twan good post - thought the movie lived and died on Kristen Stewart's tics lol; mostly she pulls it off. Deeply moody film - not sure it all works to your point... maybe it's the French setting but it almost felt like updated Besson, particularly with the focus - and derived alienation - on technology. All the brooding and supernatural hocus pocus is ultimately one long meditation on grief, guilt, forbidden desire etc. Those themes manifest differently which to me explains the sometimes wild tonal shifts - it may not always land but there's something ultimately rly touching seeing Stewart become consumed then haunted, figuratively or not

if it doesn't appeal to you, probably not. If you liked the animated version, I think this one is a fairly fun (but unspectacular) take on it. I didn't think they nailed the casting and it's a bit uneven at the start, but it does eventually find its groove. Overall, serviceable - good, even - but far from great
