I thought American Sniper was pretty cool until I started reading about the real Chris Kyle. Seemed like a real piece of s--- and all these delusional pseudo patriots defending him and attacking any detractors of the film are seriously turning me off it. Still, I do believe that it was executed rather well. Enjoy seeing the personal side of war, even if it has been done quite a bit over these last few years.

    If anyone's interested...

I did a presentation at a Graduate Student Conference at Harvard a couple years ago. The paper has finally been published.

My paper for Harvard University’s Mahindra Center for the Humanities 2013 Graduate Student conference, “Imaging the Ineffable: Representation and Reality in Religion and Film” is now published. Visit the site for papers and keynote address by filmmaker Nathaniel Dorsky and Harvard Professor Charles Hallisey. My paper is entitled "Materiality & Immateriality: Krzysztof Kieslowski’s Decalogue and Cinema’s Capacity to Evoke the Inexpressible"

u know that teaser trailer that was tense with the child and the bomb? That's the only part i liked and it's about a minute long.

so out. I usually don't buy into people calling movies propaganda, but i'd be d---ed if i said this wasn't one.

Seth Rogen made a genius comparison when calling it similar to the film that plays during Inglourious Basterds,

Insane, although there might be a bit of irony people defending Wolf of wall street last year, and denouncing American Sniper today. I haven't seen AS, but my gut tells me there's a dbl standard possibly at play.

But yeah, the fact Cooper could steal Keaton's Oscar -- as an idea -- rly f---s with me.

Double standard? How so? The films couldn't be more different, and Wolf of Wall Street is MILES better

Cooper is actually really excellent. Not worthy of winning, but worthy of a nom.

I'm not talking about quality at all - haven't seen it. I mean this debate about glorifying bad behavior, how a filmmaker's intentions impacted a movie's politics. Wolf of Wall Street was embraced by the kinds of frat douches it (seemingly, we hope) was indicting.

American Sniper is being criticized for being propaganda, galvanizing a sociopath... but Wolf wasn't? hm

Hmm, well...no. At least that's not what I took away from it. Wolf of Wall Street portrayed all the excess in an over-the-top, in-your-face manner, but I didn't read it as an endorsement of what happened. In fact, quite the opposite; when Jordan's downfall comes, it feels deserved and inevitable. If fratty douches got a boner over Jordan's lifestyle (and I'm aware that many of them did), it's a result of their own ignorance to the film's intent; I hardly think Scorsese wanted to paint him as a hero.

American Sniper is much less critical of its subject, and DOES glorify him. Eastwood's characterization is a much less three-dimensional one than Scorsese's, and the film more or less begins and ends with a whack-off-to-the-flag-cuz-troops-are-good type sentiment, abstaining from anything much more complex than that (aside from a few nuanced moments courtesy of Bradley Cooper).

I guess I would say that the criticisms of American Sniper's intentions are warranted, but my problems with the film go beyond that. I personally don't think WOWS is a good example of a double standard (although I'm sure you could find a different one).

thought it as pretty coo so far

    /shrug

some dude at work was talking about how depressing the last 30 mins are, etc etc

someone else on facebook called it one of the best war films of all time

lol. im only ever going to finish watching it because of Cooper and his recent turn as a focused actor

Starting to worry that American Sniper is gaining a ton of momentum going into the awards.

American Sniper has a lot of attention (and a lot of controversy). The fact that Bradley Cooper didn't get in for the SAG may hurt his chances (though the support for the film could translate for a win -- he's been nominated three years in a row!), but something tells me Eddie Redmayne will drive this one home. It'll be a little more clear in four days.
