I liked Palo Alto. This is what I said:

Gia Coppola demonstrates a knack for transitions, as slow zooms and music interlace emotionally resonant moments. A strong debut.

    76/100 - Very Good

Is it possible for guys to put a list of your favorite screenplays? I'd have to think for days to give a real list, but from the very top of my head, this is not definitve and not necesarily in order:

    Original
    1. Hannah & Her Sisters (Woody Allen)
    2. Pulp Fiction (Quentin Tarantino)
    3. Annie Hall (Woody Allen)
    4. Mulholland Dr (David Lynch)
    5. Before Sunrie (Kim Krizan & Richard Linklater)
    6. Hable Con Ella (Pedro Almodovar)
    7. Seven Samurai (Akira Kurosawa, Shinobu Hashimoto & Hideo Oguni)

    Adapted
    1. No Country For Old Men (Coen Brothers)
    2. Il Gattopardo (Visconti, D'amico, Campanile, Franciosa & Medioli)
    3. Bicycle Thieves (De Sica and other 6 guys)
    4. The Godfather I & II (Mario Puzo & Francis F Coppola)
    5. Dr. Strangelove (Kubrick, George & Southern)
    6. Once Upon a Time In America (Leone and other 7 guys)
    7. Gone With the Wind (Howard)

We should use this opportunity to point out that Woody is Top 3 at least when it comes to writers, if not the best ever

I can't stop watching Billy Wilder pictures. I know I should pace myself to get the most out of them, but I feel like watching them two at a time until I run out. There's something about the way he effortlessly tells a story and fleshes out characters while also giving you something to chew on. Not to mention the brilliant dialogue. "Sunset Boulevard" and "The Apartment" are easily my favorites so far.

I don't really have a list of favorite screenplays offhand but, to combine the last few posts, I would probably have a Billy Wilder film or two on there. @Old_Parr @Charlie Strangelove

The New York Film Festival just released its main slate for this year and it's a lot of Cannes carry overs. After a quick look, the ones I'm most interested in, pending screening dates are...

    Cemetery of Splendour (Apichatpong Weerasethakul)
    The Lobster (Yorgos Lanthimos)
    Mountains May Depart (Jia Zhangke)
    My Golden Days (Arnaud Desplechin)
Journey to the Shore (Kiyoshi Kurosawa)

I'm also looking forward to Carol, The Assassin, and Bridge of Spies but they all have set US release dates so I'll probably wait to see them in regular release.

@Twan i believe you talked once positively about Michelangelo Antonioni , i'm not sure. Anways, open question for everybody, do you have any brief comment on L'eclisse and L'avventura? While L'eclisse has an amazing ending i feel Antonioni doesn't find a good way to express himself through most of the film. L'avventura on the other hand is more appealing so i like it a bit more but it also has similar flaws but in a minor scale.

I haven't seen L'avventura yet but I'm not a big fan of L'Eclisse & Red Desert tbh. They're both stunningly shot and I love Monica Vitti but I can't help but feel as though Antonioni thinks he's being way more profound than he actually is, there wasn't a whole lot that I took away from either experience. I am however looking forward to checking out more of his films, particularly L'avventura & The Passenger.

Red Desert and Blow Up are the ones i'm going to see next. I see it a as mix of what you said and the fact he doesn't find a good way to tell his story. I sometimes feel like he is just making some time in the film because the characters are wandering without a clear behavior so you can't figure how to take it. When he expresses in a more straight-foward way is when you start to tie loose ends but it's not enough, at least for me. Having said that, i still find him a very interesting director. I always tend to give a rewatch in these cases.

I went through an Antonioni phase awhile ago where I watched a bunch of his films back to back. While I do dig Red Desert, L'Eclisse, The Passenger, etc. quite a bit, L'avventura is definitely the one that resonates with me the most (it is my avatar after all). Antonioni's films are certainly not easy or conventional (Ebert admitted in his Great Movies essay that it took him years to appreciate L'avventura), as they eschew anything remotely resembling traditional narrative or character development.

His tales of modern ennui and alienation are more about atmosphere and mise en scene, the positioning of his characters in frequently barren or harsh landscapes and how those environments reflect the void at his characters' core. In L'avventura especially, his approach builds to a haunting effect, a feeling of profound emptiness, with an ending that lingers long in the memory.

I was actually having a discussion about Antonioni with my film nerd friend and he suggested that Blow Up might be the best place to start, as it's arguably his most conventional work. However, I personally found it to be just as challenging as his other movies.

Don Cheadle's passion project "Miles Ahead" just got picked up for a theatrical run by Sony. Hit them back up when that comes out.

Couldn't read the article. My bad. They just picked it up for theaters a couple of days ago so I thought it was worth mentioning.
