yeah theres obviously forebearers, particularly in early 90s indie movement... could also count woody allen - manhattan as an influence. i think its fair to rly count this as a post y2k genre, both in terms of style and themes. when i saw Bujalski in 2005, the professor who interviewed him described Funny Ha Ha as, like, a game changing film

Even someone like Robert Altman who had to come up with a technical way to let actors run over each other's dialogue.
Nashville (1975) struck me as a huge influence on Slacker (as well as Boogie Nights obviously).

Mumblecore now just feels like everybody trying to be Noah Baumbach. Young college kids in apartments.
Too many people making their movie with the genre in mind. Then again, I wouldn't say I'm an expert on it.

Mumblecore is a corny a--- name and genre or whatever it is. Pls don't classify Altman & Linklater with that.

I'm talking about the defining characteristics more so than the "movement".

Mumblecore is a subgenre of independent film characterized by low budget production values and amateur actors, heavily focused on naturalistic dialogue.

That's early Linklater to a T. Too many people use it like a pejorative.

Hmm yeah I think mumblecore should be kept as a title for the movement because Pedro Costa's cinema fits that broad criteria too but it would never be associated with those sort of films by any means.

Just clarifying how I was using it, though I think it's fair to call Linklater an essential precursor to it.

I think American Hustle is excellent, and that 12 Years a Slave is Steve McQueen's best film.
I need to get on with the rest of Sokurov.
Mumblecore is silly internet troll term with no exact definition and literally zero scholarly evidence of its existence.
Quentin Tarantino is not a good filmmaker, nor a smart man. But he is a strong personality.

    2 cents.

Is Weitz' Grandma worth seeing? It's the only thing that looks decent playing at the local independent theater.
