    i do what i want.

its interesting watching both films back to back tbh as in each role, robin plays an entitled would be scenester. in results its implicit, though shes arguably more irritating. in unexpected, her privilege becomes a focal point of the film. so seeing each filmmaker grapple with #whitepeopleproblems makes for an interesting case study

      This Changes Everything 2015
      ★★★ Watched 29 Oct, 2015

[REVIEW] 70/100 - This Changes Everything (Avi Lewis, 2015)

Sincere and engaging, the environmental documentary This Changes Everything encourages us to think differently about nature. Though the film never outright lies to the audience, it does exaggerate and indulge in occasional bias.

Though the narrative becomes overtly showy and foolish, with a shift from relatable love drama to farfetch'd crime drama, the film's spontaneous energy & constant presence rendered by long take cinematography is highly immersive.

      82/100 - Great.

A highly austere and meticulously crafted short. Her diligent scratching compels and relaxes but never transcends. Curious.

      ★★★½ Watched 03 Nov, 2015

Virtuosic filmmaking & experimental sound montage curbed by (fortunately observational) propaganda. Industrial footage a wonder.

      79/100 - Very Good.

      ★★★ Watched 31 Oct, 2015

Phantom presence no longer phantomic, the supernatural less mystic, continuity destroyed, tonally similar but affected.

      67/100 - Decent.

Implications of the supernatural, a killer speech about evil, invocations of fate, and eerie af cinematography.

      86/100 - Excellent.

Rewatched The Assassin. Just as good if not better the second time round. I think I've almost finally figured out the story/relationships etc lol.

Quick thoughts on a few new movies I've seen recently...

Bridge of Spies- Sturdy, understated procedural that, like Lincoln, is about a sense of decency in a time of conflict. Impeccably crafted with considerable charm, though perhaps a bit slight in retrospect.

The Nightmare- Few movies in recent memory have freaked me out like this one did. While the special effects may not exactly be top notch, Ascher's nightmare recreations are no less effective and chilling. The point about a feedback loop between sleep paralysis and horror stories is also an interesting one. Given the documentary's real-world phenomenon, I honestly was hesitant to go to sleep the night I saw it.

Room- I can't say I'm as high on this as you guys were, but this is still pretty strong. Tremendous performances from Brie Larson and Jacob Tremblay successfully carry the film's emotional weight, and Abrahamson manages to craft a film that's delicately affecting without ever becoming maudlin. With that said, when the stakes dissipate in the second half, the film at times flounders as it tries to contrive conflict (the TV interview being the worst example). Perhaps these moments may feel more organic in the novel. Even so, there are still moments in the latter half that do pack a quiet power.

Spectre- I went in with low expectations so I didn't find this as bad as I had been lead to believe by early reviews. The first half is fairly strong and moves at a crisp pace, with the highlight being the opening sequence in Mexico. With that said, it all too often indulges in action movies cliches with a straight face and no sign of its tongue-in-cheek. And at 2 hours and 28 minutes, there's way too much dramatic dead weight.

Oh God, this was awful. Had to wait it till scenes like these were forgotten to forgive it and thus love the film as a whole. You're absolutely right to point out that the film flounders in the second half.
