I need to cop Barry. Saw it this year for the first time, I think it's right up there with Kubrick's best

Maaan screener season is delivering but I can't decide if I want to cave and watch Hateful Eight and The Revenant or save them for the big screen

I still haven't seen it so I thought I'd do it up right for a movie so renowned for its visuals. Plus I've been into historical dramas for a minute.

I expect mentions when this stuff leaks guys :KendrickCry:

Tarantino's next movie will be 5 hours long, shot in 120mm, take place in a treehouse, and Samuel Jackson will play himself in it.

The Hateful Eight is quite comfortably QT's worst next to Death Proof. Strange movie.

At least Death Proof did what it set out to do in recreating a 70s exploitation flick. The Hateful Eight is baffling in its choices and sloppy in its execution.

Yeah, I'm not even entirely sure about what The Hateful Eight is. Starts well, but quickly ends up being a mishmash of a bunch of different genres that's too concerned with being insulting than crafty. Its offensiveness is clearly a reaction to people's moral issues with Django, and a fully unhinged fanboy QT is never a good thing. Too familiar with its characters, too restrictive in its setting, and the result is a childish acting contest that goes nowhere.

There are too many good things to be all that negative, but I'm extremely underwhelmed for the most part. QT needs to dial it back a few notches and place his interests elsewhere.

@Charlie Strangelove @Pinhead I am pleased you guys are with me on Hateful Eight -- thought the first half was rly interesting, then it just gets sooo corny.

And, Spike Lee is right. We need to revoke QT's ghetto pass. I applaud him for writing strong roles (sometimes) for women, as well as black actors (usually named Samuel L.) but it's getting a little indulgent imo.

I think QT's weird fetish for black culture is the least of this picture's problems. For a lauded screenwriter, he absolutely mangles the structure of the story. This from the guy whose control over the nonlinear narrative was flawless from his debut. His actors run wild like it's a David O. Russell project. For the life of me, I have no idea why he would dig up Lawrence of Arabia cameras to s---t in a cabin. The few times the filmstock is used to its potential are shoehorned in awkwardly and are completely foreign to Tarantino's catalog up to this point. That awkward soundtrack cue where the camera travels out of the carriage then cuts abruptly right back where it started is a perfect example. The ending feels like a bad joke that would only kind of work if Lars von Trier was doing it.

That said, it wasn't awful. There's a lot of talent onscreen. It's just so bewildering. I kind of enjoyed being like :what22:

yeah its certainly an interesting film... with alot of positives. the long dormant qt stan in me thinks -- and this is the trouble critiquing a filmmaker like this -- you could rebut your issues with structure w/ "well, he meant to do it this way. its an homage to b movies IDIOT"

the film just seems too gratuitous -- from the blood to the vomiting to the dialogue which (like in k--- bills/django) gives you the impression tarantino jizzed all over himself when writing

it lacks the playful "cinema can alter history!" point of IB, even django... and doesnt rly have too too much to say imo. so why does it exist?

I've never been a fan of the "it was intentional therefore can't be criticized" defense. Kind of a non sequitur.
