I thought this was fun for the most part and an interesting contrast to Batman vs. Superman. Like that hero vs. hero movie, the movie uses collateral damage and the deaths of civilians as its jumping off point, posing tough questions only to abandon them in favor of the expected franchise building and CGI action. However, where Zach Snyder, for his of all his flaws as a filmmaker, at least brings a distinct visual aesthetic and crafts memorable comic imagery, the Russo brothers adhere closely to the Marvel aesthetic of overwhelming blandness (here's hoping Ryan Coogler can bring a little more personality to Black Panther). What the Russos do bring is an economical efficiency in pacing, action and narrative, which is primarily why, in the end, Civil War is the superior film to the messy mishmash of B vs. S and why the Russos are sort of perfect for the Marvel formula.

Whereas Snyder and crew struggled to coherently balance a small handful of iconic characters with the needs of foundation building, the Russos are able to cleanly handle a multitude of characters and strands, while simultaneously giving each hero their respective due. Some of the novelty of seeing all of these heroes together has certainly worn off since the first Avengers, but the airport sequence comes closest to capturing the childlike joy of the comics come to life. Though it's not the most viscerally exciting action setpiece, it incorporates all of the unique abilities and personalities of its characters in crowd-pleasing fashion. The other pleasures for these films usually come from the cast and that's still the case here, as the key players continue to maintain a buoyant chemistry in Marvel's generally welcome light-hearted tone, especially in comparison to DC's dour proceedings.

Overall, it's an entertaining, audience-satisfying blockbuster that takes almost no risks (There's one narrative misdirection for which you could sense the writers patting themselves on the back)...a fun soap opera for young dudes. However, with twice as many superhero movies to come in the next few years, even a strong entry like this suggests that the genre might be in need of some reinvention.

ye this is the best Marvel movie to date I think. I was kinda hoping it'd be darker though.

Also, i never like the Spiderman's personalities/actors but this guy seems alright. just wish they'd tone the slapsticky s--- he says down just a bit. Glad he's not some frail stuttering loser though
