Plenty of artists have sampled famous speeches and other things in their albums (such as kanye with who will survive in america) i see this as sort of the same thing, a lot of what pac said in that interview was very relevant to this album, and i thought it fit well

It was much better used than all those crappy unreleased pac verses that other people are just throwing over their tracks....

I honestly wouldn't waste your breath, I can already predict Swizz/WPG calling it extremely corny and/or contrived, and never moving from that opinion

But even if you feel the albums great, do you not think it's at least a little bit of those things? Like, how is King Kunta not at all contrived? How is Institutionalized not even a little corny?

How Much a Dollar Cost is easily my favorite song. Best beat, best features, and best rapping from Kendrick on the album. Great song. It's the only track on the album that I REALLY like right now.

    Theory:khaled:

i believe when he says "when the s--- hit the fan, is you still a fan n-----?"

he is also asking his fans if they are fans after this album because of how different and pro black it is

    just another meaning:jordan:

Because it's about self-awareness. And how much leeway you give a certain because of that. Someone could go through atmosphere's catalogue and ask the same questions, and they wouldn't be wrong to do so...why does slug get to get a way with it?

So I guess what I'm saying is that yes it is a little of all those things, but they aren't detrimental to the final product.

I don't get how King Kunta is contrived btw

And kendrick was channeling some old school s--- on institutionalized...him and snoop were almost indistinguishable. The beat, the mixing, the overall vibe -- all great. Nothing "corny" about the final product. Just a good song

The pac interview could be seen as corny, but I'd argue that it works in context, and is some well earned social commentary at the end of an album that was also primarily centered around a personal, internal struggle for kendrick. It's more direct than any other moment on the album, but the entire album progress that way now that I think about it -- as kendricks character on the album recognizes that he needs to return home with something of worth to share, some way to empower and educate (yes, continue "pac's work"), the songs get more pointed.

Also, something like the pac interview is offset by the criticisms kendrick is hurling his way prior to it on that same track -- he's presenting both sides of the coin. hes airing out hypocrisy in general (ghost writing in rap all the way to not being their for his sister, pointing fingers not only at himself and his peers, but the entire black community).
well first, why are you acting like I have some sort of blatantly predictable opinion?

and no, I wasn't. I was saying I can predict that you'll fixate on something like the Pac interview, and consider any arguments in it's favor as moot because it's "ughhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh," as you put it

Tbh I was expecting an album full of tracks like TBTB, especially after seeing that album cover. I actually sat and gave it a proper listen earlier and I missed a lot before, namely the poem throughout the album. I'm gonna sit down, shut the f--- up and take it all in over the next few days
