Yes, I get that. But, again, it feels like your point is evolving -- initially, this was about me not taking this silly s--- serious enough. Obviously, it's fine 19-year-olds grandstand about their belief in #socialjustice, but that doesn't mean I should take it serious. And, more the point, this isn't about abstract 19-year-olds, this discussion was about your culpability.

While I may occasionally resort to strawmen arguments, your tactics often are rhetorical rope-a-dopes. Just as disingenuous.

then it's a slight misunderstanding--i dont want you to take high schooler facebook statuses seriously; i feel like you lump things in with those high school facebook statuses that dont belong there. like, being offended by lil dicky is not necessarily the same as teenagers thinking they're deep.

I'm suggesting being offended by lil dicky isn't as intellectually removed from other reactionary stances online as you might like. 'Racist' is such a loaded term, and in various ways its institutionalized as you likely know, so demonizing a single artist feels arbitrary and startlingly narrow.

Full circle, the nature of the internet often lends to simplistic labeling, another reason to not take much of the blather seriously. this dialogue aside.

eh, i already said that i'm not calling out lil dicky for simply being a white rapper. there are plenty of white rappers who i wouldn't call racist. he's not a stand-in for a large trend in what i said.

i also don't know if you should be trivializing it. i get that it doesn't bother you that much, but it's pretty serious to a lot of people.

I'm not trivializing it - I do think it's politically correct and somewhat reactionary though. It's an interesting question though about the kinds of acceptable voices in hip hop. (edit - I don't particularly agree with this myself, but I also have listened to Dicky without objection... x-clan and others have been described as anti-white at times, but their voice is welcomed, etc. dicky isn't burning crosses, so not sure why its okay for -white- rap critics to pounce... white guilt smh)

Disclaimer: this isn't a straight analogy. But out of curiosity, did you find a comic like Jamie Kennedy racist? Not trying to bait you, just getting a sense of where you think the line is..

so is my discomfort with lil dicky's race politics less valid because it's "politically correct"?

I think "PC" responses are often condescending and untruthful, although based in good intentions. But, again, this gets to broader issues about race and your own place in hip hop. You don't find a tension in being white critic calling a white rapper racist? Like you're rap's NAACP? move over julian bond

okay, and i don't disagree. but you're talking in the abstract. is me calling lil dicky racist "condescending"?

in this case? no. part of it is because i don't know how "in" hip-hop he is--he feels like he's making it a sideshow. i think you're probably just trying to get me to talk about this irrespective of the dicky thing, but in this case i don't think it's a nuanced issue. i think dicky is a bro-y racist and that's it.

It's hard to read into your soul -- despite my attempts -- but predicated on some of the preachy things I've seen you post, I'd say there's an element of condescension there. It's a fine line, as I'd say broadly, profiting off hip hop when ur white/privileged is dicey... but, as a genre, I don't see why hip hop can't allow Dicky as well as gimmicky s--- like Lonely Island or more traditional acts like xclan. If there's an audience and its marketable, isn't that the point?
idk, i feel like its arbitrary - you're singling out dicky bc mostly he's kind of a jokey artist, and isn't your thing. you want to make it some moral objection and im just not sure its that clear cut.

I mean, we're treading our tires a bit, so feel free to write me a 500-word apology declaring me the victor, and ill walk away. ill say this in conclusion though: dicky isnt as overtly racist as someone like tucker max was sexist. that's where i think there's nuance... its not mutually exclusive

Smh at @WPG labeling dicky as a racist. Gotta love liberals who suffer from white guilt. If you suffer from so much white guilt then move to the ghetto and see how long that white guilt lasts

He tweeted "March" a while back but recently changed it to April in a podcast.

So we'll get it mid July
