Imagine someone promises you the album of life and then after 15 years they give you this and say “oh yeah this isn’t actually that really good one you wanted but it’s still good”

like this was a career topper, victory lap from a 50 y/o man celebrating his life story - a black mans story, a journey of music - becoming a major motion picture. not detox.

Yay, album holds up better than it probably should, it's cohesive as h---, similar to Yeezus in that it's hard to listen to any one song from the album without playing the others. Would even go as far as to say that while it doesn't have the ridiculous highs of 2001, it's a better front to back listen.

It is an absolutely fine album with nothin in particular wrong with it that I have no interest in hearing again. I’m sure it was amazing for Dre diehards but in my eyes he didn’t have to release this album and it didn’t really do much for him or his legacy. Glad he was happy with it

Yay. It's the perfect closer to his career and a worthy end of a trilogy. tbh it's kind of astonishing that we got an album that good from AARP-cover-50-year-old-billionaire Dr. Dre.

Disagree. If this was Detox it would have 15 year old Eminem and 50 cent verses all over it lol. Even if some of the beats were created in the Detox sessions and then revived and worked on again later, it sounds modern and most of the vocals were clearly recent.

No it didn’t as it was recorded in 2 years during the filming of Straight Outta Compton.

People give Jay Electronica more lenience with his project being completely mid after yearsss of waiting... When in contrast Dre has been making brilliant hip hop for 30 years.

Show me 90% of the artists featured on Compton rapping better on their own projects around the same time.

Forgotten immediately isn’t a measure of quality, that’s like using sales in an argument. If a project isn’t marketed & is exclusive to a streaming service that the majority of people don’t have & 16 years (3 generations) have passed since their last project I’m not really going to expect hype or long lasting discourse on it - are you?

    I'm inclined to say YAY

Though it didn't have the staying power like its predecessors, it was still a tremendous and worthy addition and possible chapter closer on one of the game's greatest artists discography.

Dre will never put out a new project.

    And I'm okay with that.

to answer take care: I’m in a weird position I rly like it and def see its classic contention, but I just personally like his other projects more. Nwts, iyrt, more life, there’s a handful of slightly lower than classic tier projects I find far, far more enjoyable. I still see tc as being a completely fair proposition for being classic and I wouldn’t disagree myself I just have a weird thing where albums I agree may be less technically cohesive just strike my fancy more

as for Compton I won’t lie I haven’t rly revisited since release, and one of the biggest songs w Kendrick and Eminem I just straight up didnt bump literally cuz this forum burnt me out on it lmaoo (I still to this day haven’t listened to unmastered untitled purely for how discussion soured me on it lol). It introduced me to paak who ended up becoming every bit as relevant as people made him out to be then, which is cool. I feel like there was some other rapper on there who I haven’t heard from at all since then idk. I guess that’s the most damning thing about Compton. It’s forgettable to those of us who don’t have a vested interest in seeing dre’s legacy play out to its conclusion. This album was the musical equivalent of the last 20 mins of Disaster Artist, the peak happened and everyone knows it except the editor.

and don’t get me wrong I vividly remember growing up on 2001, it’s not that I’m some out of touch zoomer who can’t engage w the art, I’m just engaging w Compton the way I imagine a 12/13 year old might engage with Kanye’s recent work. It’s fine, sure, it’s got some cool tracks but like... eh?
