Dec 21, 2020 That would be so much better. If this was seen as a double album... (would be amazing if it was released as such, like it is now) it would be seen as very impressive. Amazing how much a label or titling of something can change the perception of it.
Dec 21, 2020 I agree that it sounds completely different. Besides the alfred skits it does sound like a new album with a new sound, but they packed it in a deluxe of side a to make the overall sales of MTBMB look better, a cheap move that alot of artists and labels do. But it wont count as a new album no matter how bad any of us want it. 80k this week will look pretty good thanks to the simple technicality of calling it a deluxe.
Dec 21, 2020 I don't think this would ever be counted as a double album if not for the deluxe streaming game forcing him to put it as a deluxe. It would be something between a sequel and a companion album—Relapse/Relapse 2, Doc. 2/Doc 2.5, Fishscale/More Fish, Future/Hendrix. Related projects but ones that do not share the same track list.
Dec 21, 2020 In the Eminem canon, it'll be considered an album just like how More Life and IYRT are considered albums in the Drake canon. At this point, an album is an album is an album. No mixtape/playlist/deluxe label can change something like that beyond a technicality. If it's new, original music, it's an album.
Dec 21, 2020 Exactly. People will talk about it as an album. We wont rate it as MTBMB Deluxe or just MTBMB. MMLP Deluxe is a 'real' deluxe. It's a few extra tracks, and we don't talk about it like a separate album. This is a whole new album. Bizarre packaging. Cheapened this great sequel/companion album. But that's how we'll rate it, as a separate album 'Side A, Side B'. We wouldn't do that if it wasn't an album. People caught up in phrasing or how they marketed it lol.
Dec 21, 2020 Such a riveting debate as to whether this deluxe release is a new album or a deluxe release. Surely the main reason it was released this way, and not as a new album is because it's not "new"? The stuff on here is clearly an extension of the last album. It probably includes a couple of songs that didn't clear in time before, and any newer songs were tailored to fit. Honestly it doesn't really matter when the songs were made, "new" doesn't mean the same thing to us as it does to the people who made it, Em has 20 years worth of unused stuff to play with, and it would be new to us regardless. In this case they've been included as a complimentary side B to 'Music To Be Murdered By'.
Dec 21, 2020 All of those albums are counted as different albums as far as sales and actual discographies go and are more like indirect sequels. Side B is literally sold and listed under the same album and that to me is like a double album more than a sequel. It may have the quality of a standalone title but technicaly its not, no matter how we as listeners treat it.
Dec 21, 2020 Yes that’s what I’m saying—if not for the deluxe trend it would be like those albums. I’m saying that’s is how we should treat side b. It’s only part of side A because of a technicality. It’s a companion/sequel album. If you wanna call it a double album fine buts clearly a separate entity
Dec 21, 2020 This is why I hate the semantics involved with this s---. Whether someone calls it a deluxe or a mixtape or a playlist all this s--- is an album at the end of the day as long as it’s new original music
Dec 21, 2020 It’s irritating. I think back to Young Thugs “debut” album coming after like 5 retail “mixtapes” just feels like an excuse to brush off music that may not be up to par.
Dec 21, 2020 100% lol. Only reason most mixtapes were called mixtapes in the late 00/early 10s is cuz they were free
Dec 21, 2020 I only call it a mixtape if it’s like Wayne’s where he goes over industry beats or something like drakes compilation albums of leaks that aren’t meant to be a cohesive body of work just a comp of songs to officially put out
Dec 21, 2020 A "deluxe" released a YEAR later with the most ridiculous title "Side B DELUXE EDITION"... Brilliant game plan, guys. Shoulda just called it "Side B", and should have had way more promo for it. I'm getting tired of this ghosting s--- he's pulling off.
Dec 21, 2020 I don't think it is platinum in the US yet (I could be wrong), which is probably why they went with the deluxe.
