Feb 17, 2015I think a lot of it is pure status. He put out a classic album 20 years ago, has continued to put out music that has been commercially successful and (on the main) critically acclaimed.
He hasn't had a great deal of drama for a very long time, he's put out a lot of music and most of it has been good to great, he hasn't stumbled too badly in terms of acts he has endorsed or signed, he's been successful from a business perspective, seems to have a pretty solid personal life (despite all the divorce rumors that were swirling last summer) and is generally seen as a mature, adult presence in hip hop.
He isn't super adventurous musically, sticks to what works and does it well. He hasn't gone out on too many limbs that he could have broken and fallen.
He's a steady, sturdy presence in hip hop for about two decades now, he doesn't need or want controversy.

That's not that funny. A lot of people consider jay a legend and better than at least half of the dudes on your top 10.
