Oct 22, 2015 Glad you brought this back m8, nothing beats good ol discussions about great music. Midnight Marauders is an easy 9.2/10. Tip & Phife's chemistry was in peak form when this album rolled around. There is a very "grand" element to this album that makes it entirely unique compared to their previous 2 classics, I still think TLET is the quintessential Tribe album but MM edges it as the album I'd rather listen to more.
Oct 22, 2015 Such a great album, but I can't properly tell you my thoughts seeing as I haven't listened to it in ages. I'll re-listen to it today/tomorrow so I can properly review it.
Oct 22, 2015 I simple 9/10 for me. ATCQ made some brilliant albums and Midnight Marauders is certainly up to that standard. Electric Relaxation has one of my favourite beats ever, I don't know why but I just love it. I also agree that Phife is really good on this album, but of course Q-Tip is the star imo. This album flows brilliantly and the production doesn't let us down. A classic ATCQ sound.
Oct 22, 2015 The Love Movement is severely underrated. But i hope i got some time to check this out.. we got till sunday or something right?
Oct 22, 2015 Woow you killed it with this pick. Hope this doesnt get overlooked. This is the definition of a classic album. I used to hate that I wasnt cognizant of music when this and other stuff around this era came out, but in retrospect it's fun to look back and listen to pre and post releases and notice the subtle shifts and influences that certain music had. The production on this really genius and the main reason why I love this album. The walking basslines, just sit so comfortably behind the boom bap drums. Not to mention how perfectly the samples and instrumentation fill up the tracks. It's so creative and a nice change from the smoother, jazzier feel of tlet even though that was classic in its own as well. Also, the flows ride the instrumentals so nicely. Love the moment when the vocals drop on pretty much every song. The sequencing on this is great too, definitely one of those projects that you listen to front to back. The robotic narrator lady, definitely helps lead into some tracks. I especially like how it leads into "how we get down". Dont really have much negative things to say about this project, but I do prefer the "nicer", more positive, mellow quest on their previous projects. The only thing that would make me put tlet over this, but I just dont have the heart to trump this down to #2. Id say its an easy 9.5
Oct 22, 2015 Oh and @BigCountry what happened to peter parker? I always felt like we had similar points of view. Did he just stop posting?
Oct 22, 2015 9/10 Even though I slightly prefer The Low End Theory, this album contains the first song i heard from ATCQ and one of my favourite songs ever (Award Tour and Electric Relaxation)
Oct 22, 2015 Not sure. He disappeared for a month back in the summer too when he was on vacation. I'm assuming he just got real busy with school or something.
Oct 22, 2015 I'm a little heart broken I wasn't mentioned. Glad you brought this back though. I always thought about randomly bumping this thread. I'd give Midnight Marauders an 8.5. Just love the vibe of the album and I enjoy every track except the Hot Sex which is a bonus anyways. I prefer this over Low End Theory, but not by much. Both are dope af. This is definitely a project I should revisit more often. A bit embarrassing but I've yet to listen to their debut.
Oct 22, 2015 Sorry man, I hadn't seen you post much lately so I didn't know if you'd even get it. Thanks for participating though, hopefully @Koolo can set us up a user group so that won't be a problem from now on.
Oct 23, 2015 @BigCountry Haha no worries. I barely post on here so I can't blame you. Looking forward to this thread being active again.
Oct 24, 2015 I try to get a pool of at least 10 ratings, and switch it out every few days or so. Would be great if this could get bigger. I'll probably change it tomorrow or sunday. Anyway, I listened to this album at work today and it brought back memories of when I saw Tribe when I was 15 or so at a music festival. It was the first festival I'd been to and my mom secretly bought a ticket (only $30 back then) to make sure it wasn't a huge drug fest and cuz there were some things she wanted to see as well. Her revealing to me afterwards that she went and enjoyed it but wasn't a fan of those "Sucka n-----" and "Hot Sex" songs will forever be engrained in my memory. Tribe was the first rap act I ever stanned (I remember searching limewire for hours for single random songs featuring Q-Tip), and I didn't realize how lucky I was to have seen them at the time, especially since that was their reunion show, and now they allegedly played their last show ever in 2013. But we'll see. I was a proponent of Low End Theory being their best album up until a few years ago, but as others have said, something just feels smoother about Marauders (hard for an album with Electric Relaxation not to be), especially in regards to Phife. Oh, and there's no "Infamous Date r---." Gotta go with a 9.5. Fun fact: at one point when I was younger my ringtone was a loop of Phife Dawg saying "I like my beats hard like two-day-old s---, steady eatin' booty MCs like cheese grits" over and over.
Oct 24, 2015 I think the thread isn't as popular as it should be because of all young users that haven't listened to older music. Maybe you could include a more recent album that they would like to participate in. I'd go with something like Man on the Moon, Long Live A$AP, or something along those lines. Something that could get them interested in the thread and maybe keep them around to want to participate in the future. Could even get some of those young f---ers to listen to some more of the essentials. As a side note, I'd like to see Lifestylez Ov Da Poor & Dangerous at some point.
Oct 24, 2015 Yeah, I had started off doing newer albums but I wanted to mix it up. Will def do Big L at some point.
Oct 24, 2015 @Loyalty was nice enough to create a user group for this thread, so join RateThisAlbum if you want to be tagged when this thread is updated. I will still tag people for the next few rounds until the group fills up. Let me know if you do not wish to be tagged anymore. Anyway... Based upon 8 ratings, SectionEighty gives Midnight Marauders a 9.1 Next up... [10/24/15] A$AP Rocky - At.Long.Last.A$AP Decided to do a more recent album as @Maad City suggested. I chose ALLA instead of Long.Live because people seem more divided on it, and I'm interested to hear people's thoughts on it now that we've sat on it for six months or so. @Narsh @Skippy @Flacko @Meero @Fire Squad @Five Star @WPG @Tha Story @Swizz @Bleed @Jet @Changeling @Fazers @Joshua Smoses @Kvp187 @MTY @Radeem @Charlie Strangelove @Peter Parker @Ordinary Joel @Maximus @Oliver Queen @Jakey @Mano @FreeAgent @Worm @able @captain awesome @Luke @Saladin @El Ares @gorealsteady @Franch46 Again, join RateThisAlbum if you would like to be tagged each round and let me know if you want me to stop tagging you altogether, as I'll still tag people for a few rounds until the group fills up. Thanks!
Oct 24, 2015 7 at most, tries to do too much artsy fartsy s--- but rocky is still good at making very listenable music for the most part.
