With all the recent talk of 'old vs. new Em', I thought I'd shed some light on one of my favourite and oft-overlooked Eminem era - 2003; or - the 'diss record era'. I've compiled a little mix of diss tracks spanning from 2002-2004 (but all probably recorded around the same time) from various mixtapes, guest appearances, etc. I thought it appropriate to name the compilation 'Invasion' as most of these songs come from DJ Green Lantern's Invasion mixtape series from the same time.

And yes, I know I'm excluding Patiently Waiting, Lady, We As Americans and a few others but they don't fit with the theme of this compilation - I wanted this to sound like a cohesive project with a common theme rather than a random assortment of songs (and that theme is the Ja Rule/Murda Inc/Benzino/The Sauce/Canibus beefs of the time)

    Here's the tracklist:

    01. Invasion (Freestyle)
    02. Nail in the Coffin
    03. The Sauce
    04. Bully
    05. Conspiracy (Freestyle)
    06. Monkey See, Monkey Do
    07. Bump Heads ft. G Unit
    08. We All Die One Day ft. G Unit, Obie Trice
    09. Hail Mary ft. 50 Cent, Busta Rhymes
    10. Riddle/Armageddon (Freestyle)
    11. Go to Sleep ft. Obie Trice, DMX
    12. Say My Name ft. Xzibit, Nate Dogg
    13. s--- Hits The Fan ft. Dr. Dre, Obie Trice
    14. Doe Rae Me ft. D12, Obie Trice
    15. Kay Slay/My Music Is Soothing (Freestyle)
    16. I'm Gone ft. Obie Trice
    17. Canibitch
    18. Fubba U Cubba Cubba

So my question is, if this were an official Eminem release, how would you rate it? How would you change the tracklist around? Would you add/remove any other songs? how would you rank it in comparison to his official albums and other projects? Your favourite and worst songs? Would Encore have sounded more like this had that Straight From the Lab EP never leaked?

The Sauce, Bully & Can-I-b---- are 10/10 songs, I love all three of the invasion freestyles, and My Name is almost perfect. The G-Unit and D12 tracks aren't that good though. Wouldn't make a great project overrall, but I love listening to some of these from time to time. Effortless flow, great energy, not as raw as the 01 disses (I Remember, Quitter, etc) but his rapping was impressive back then, no matter what the lyrics were.

    I would rate it: Tedious.

Em is on decent form but that constant beef material is as exhausting to me as a listener as it was to him to write. The 50 Cent effect is in full swing and gangster Eminem was kinda s-----y. I've always thought "Bully" was a cringe-worthy concept for a diss track too.

Probably why it 'was never released it leaked, he'd-a never given Benzino that much attention intentionally'

Aaaaaaaaaah the Tim westwood session man!

Him and D12 were fuuuuuucked up- wasted rhyming all evening for about 2 1/2 hours! s--- was insaaaaaane.

U know whats crazy... I was @ london Docklands arena too that very night those sessions happened, when he was over for MMLP promo with D12.

It was 15 and It was when em was blowing the f--- up worldwide and the MMLP has only been out a matter of months.

Me and my boy got s lift home from parents, and we heard Marshall voice on the radio... like 'turn that s--- up mum'..... Listend to it on the way home pumped as f---, adrenaline fuelled from the concert just finished.

Those were the days man. I had to cop that s--- on disc afterwards. I know have the sessions in the vault on a disc somewhere that I paiud some chump on ebay a tenner for way back when.

    Cool story huh bro's??

I think its an interesting reflection of where he was at at that point in his career. To me, these are some of the best instrumentals he ever rapped over (and most of them are self-produced). It's clear the drugs hadn't taken full effect just yet, true every song deals with the same topic but he is far more focused, aggressive and still lyrically potent and versatile in comparison to where he was just a year later. I really think this would have been an interesting collection to his catalogue, in the form of an mixtape or 'lost tapes' kind of compilation. I'd give it a solid 8/10.
