Feb 18, 2021Em is a d---ed weirdo and he has a very specific way of doing things and according to Budden, it’s based on analytics that his people come up with. There are so many collaborations that Em could have and should have done the past twenty something years but he just winds up doing songs with big name Pop artists or random artists no one really cares for. He might even be intimidated by certain rappers lyrically speaking or beat wise. How the f--- you have Alchemist by your side for years and you just primarily use him as a DJ? What kind of goofy s--- is that? Signs Griselda and pretty much does nothing for them. He had Gunn in the middle of the crowd recording him while he’s onstage. It’s almost as if Em is autistic or something.

But I do not agree totally with the OP. Em collabed with many big and good MCs back then, m--- and Red, Sticky Fingaz, Jay Z, Xzibit, Cypress Hill, produced for Nas, and dont forget about the 8 Mile OST line up, which was amazing with people like Rakim.
However it is true that some collabs are odd that they never happened..Last edited: Feb 18, 2021modli, emanisbetter, Fchkl and 6 others like this. -

It's because recovery made eminem a popstar. At his peak he was a mega superstar, but not a pop star.
Further hurts his credibility too by doing so. Some people say, how come kendrick can do a song with Taylor swift, or snoop with Katy Perry and it's cool. They never built their career shi--ing on and belittling pop stars. For eminem to basically only do pop s--- from 2010-2017 is frankly textbook hypocritical sell out s---. Especially artists like rihanna and gwen Stefani who he had previously insulted/made fun of (for the record, I love both of their music but doesnt make a lick of sense for eminem's brand to work with them) -

I kinda agree with OP. It never really made sense to me why Em, as a competitive/lyrical rapper, rarely or never worked with people like Nas, Jay-Z, Kendrick, Cole, Pharoahe Monch, Crooked I, Tech N9ne, Joey Badass, etc. The disappointment of Revival was also huge because in the months leading up to the releaae, he kept shouting out the legends and wearing t-shirts with Illmatic, The Chronic, Doggystyle, etc. Then the photos came with 2Chainz. Then the tracklist came and BAM we got Pink, Beyonce, Skylar Grey, and Ed Sheeran.emanisbetter, asvdawg, Mothrfckr and 4 others like this. -

First of all Em is a full grown up man now.
When you're coming up, you want to collaborate with anybody. Whoever. Talented or not. Because you just want to reach as many people as you can and put as much music as you can out there.
Then, once you become known and famous (without reaching the mega-star status) you start getting more selective.
After that if (and it's a BIG "if") you ever reach the super star level, you obviously only want to collaborate with people of your status, people who can help you keep being up there, and also because if you collaborate with young, lesser-known, artists it's like you're selling yourself short. You want to prove your worth and artists need to prove they are worth it before you decide to work with them.
But then, if you've been in the industry for 20+ years, always at the top, always in the spotlight, you might want to start giving back. And working with up-and-coming artists who you think will be great one day (or are already), as much as other legends.
Also it should be noted that Paul probably filtered A LOT of artists back then, when Em was in his early 30s, he was huge back then and every single hip-hop artist probably wanted to work with Eminem and that's why you have managers.
It's also a very well known fact that Eminem didn't charge for beats or features if he respected the artist, he did it for the love of hip-hop.
So I don't get this demonization of him.
When he talked about D12 on Stepping Stones, he didn't say he used them. At least I didn't get that from the song. What I understood is that he never meant to make them feel that way, but he's real friend in the group was Proof, and the other 4 were more like "pals" who he got along great, but once Proof was gone, the other guys didn't mean as much to him.
Obviously all of us are worlds apart from Em, but I think we all have a group of friends, and within that group we have our one best friend and the rest are people we joke around with, we go out, have fun, we share a laugh or whatever but they aren't what keeps the group together. They're more like "filler" songs on an album. -

So, when Em started doing collabs with pop stars heavy, it came off as though he was trying to use them to stay relevant on the charts or with the younger crowd. I don't fault Eminem for this, mind you, but I think that's was makes 2010-2017 Eminem stand out so much from his prime.
It went from Eminem singing his own hooks on songs like Without Me, Cleaning Out My Closet, and When I'm Gone or having a rapper like Nate Dogg or 50 Cent singing the hook for him to having the most blatant pop stars like Rihanna, Gwen, Pink, Skylar Grey, Sia, Ed Sheeran, Kehlani, etc. doing hooks for him.
And, like I said, I think this is mostly Interscope at work and not really something Em was pushing hard for himself. But it does stand out for the people that got into him during his prime.underground, SLAYAR, D12Shady and 2 others like this. -

Em has been nothing but loyal to Royce so I disagree with that part.
That said, I do think Interscope tried hard to milk or market Eminem as a "pop star", hence all the pop collabs from the 2010-2017 era after Relapse failed to live up to commercial expectations.
I do think it's strange that Eminem hasn't collabed with Elzhi or Black Milk before, two very talented Detroit artists who've done a lot for hip hop.
I also think Eminem not doing a project with Madlib, Alchemist, etc. was a missed opportunity. Rapping over jazzy or boom bap sounding beats different from the Dre, pop, or trap sound will highlight his versatility as a rapper imho. -

Look at his ‘95 & previous music, this is 1 of his best cuts from that era but still shows the contrast between what he was creating then to what he was creating with the Bass Bros 2 years later:
