Like most things in life, you get what you put into To p---- A Butterfly. It’s a sprawling, dense record that will likely result in both premature dismissals and vast overanalyzation. As portrayed in the caterpillar and butterfly poem, a duality can exist within a single entity, and it’s up to you to find the right balance between the two, because not everything is so black and white (no pun intended). While To p---- A Butterfly may not have as many universal hit records as good kid, m.A.A.d city, when the dust settles and all is said-and-done, people are going to find that it’s much bigger and more important than that — both musically and in scope.

"Like most things in life, you get what you put into To p---- A Butterfly."
i don't know if that's an effective defense of someone's work. your enjoyment might hinge on how much attention/effort you give it, but i don't think you can shift responsibility to the listener as an argument in an album's favor. sometimes you'll have something totally inscrutable (the lesser aesop rock records, etc), where the artist doesn't do an adequate job providing thrulines/roads in, and that's a failure on the artist's part. other times, you'll have a challenging record (like aes' better material) where, if the listener doesn't put in enough effort, they might not grasp it--but the record is still empirically as good. you're talking about the fan experience, which is fine, but not the work itself.Slyk, lil uzi vert stan and DKC like this. -
