Okay then for example: make a cd with 2 songs but having the cd length, then go call it an album, see how weird that is?

Why not say if it's 10 or less call it an ep or mixtape?

why are you hung up on semantics? obviously the lines are blurred now, esp with digital releases--but if there's original production and the album clocks in at or around 30 minutes, it's an album.

There shouldn't be a standard for album length. It's an art piece. It can be whatever it wants. I wish more rappers took this stance. LP/EP/Mixtape titles shouldn't matter in 2015.

Give me an artist's 5 best songs rather than even 15. There are tracks on classic albums than should have been cut.

yeah. now, to present what the other side of this coin actually should be, there are imperfect songs on classic albums that should be there--those de la albums were messy as all h---, but there's no reason to change them. you could cut life after death to one disc, but would you want to?

I'm really confused by @UniqueButterfly example. Your example of a 30 min song shows you have no regards to the listeners.

EDIT: What I'm saying is most listeners do not have the time to commit to just one song that's 30 minutes or however ridiculously long.

I do care about the listeners that's why its going to be a very good 30 minute long song, now if the listener is willing to sit through it then cool, if not then fine, I can't control people's anatomy

ok i was just making a joke m8 but to be clear, writing can be (and often is) too on-the-nose on a line-by-line basis without coalescing into a whole (i.e. being aimless when you consider the entire album). i know we disagree on the kendrick album in particular and i'm not interested in having that discussion with you right now, but those separate criticisms of the album don't contradict one another.

Whether it's good or not, you're asking listeners to sit through a 30 minute with the same theme, beat, etc.

If you're going to put that much effort into a 30min or more song, why not give the listener the opportunity to digest it in portions?
