    I’m kinda of glad as it leaves a lot to desire on purpose — I just hope this isn’t the sonic direction he’s taking because BLUGH

    You like that type of production & the auto-tune stuff, it’s not for me, never has been.

    It caters towards an audience that Cole never had before the Young Thug collab, he’s spent the last few years appealing to fans outside his core, which is fine when it doesn’t completely change your sound on your solos especially after spending his whole career before that *not* sounding like his peers so this is a huge misfire personally, he started to pivot on KOD but his own production propelled it regardless. Some older fans alike share my sentiments (not on this board.)

    Hopefully it’s just that — an interlude & not a reflection of the project but that’s 3 misfires out of 4 solo drops lately:

    Interlude
    Lion King on Ice
    Snow On Tha Bluff

    The Climb Bac    k is 1 of the best Cole tracks I’ve heard so he’s definitely capable. When I think of a Cole interlude, this is the calibre I be expecting:

    The autotune is barely there...it's still a lyrical song but more melodic, it's soulful production with trap drums. This caters to both fanbases if anything.

    I love it when artists switch up their sound completely from record to record and J Cole is long overdue for that.

    I’m not really sure what you mean by that because all he has done is maintained his core elements in style throughout. He has switched up his production & song structures from Born Sinner to KOD. 4 Your Eyez Only sounds nothing alike either. Clearly that was the correct route to take as he’s been on an upward trajectory since the start popularity wise.

    I'm not saying there were no changes at all—there was definitely a shift from his first two albums to FHD and 4YEO in terms of structure, and then from those to KOD in terms of production, but this is the first time I've heard a Cole single before the album that made me think the album's going to subvert expectations in a much larger way.

    Cole's dabbled in autotune since his debut idk what you mean but agree abt the climb back, s--- so good
