Apr 30, 2015 Love RD/PF... and have a soft spot in my heart for Jackie Brown tbh. It's not that I don't like IB, but when it comes to DU or k--- Bills, it just feels over indulgent. I get what he's doing, but sometimes, it's too much of a good thing. Yeah, I'm all for the PF Oscar. Him winning for Django, arguably his weakest and most straight forward film to date, was undeserved. disagree about k--- bill, and yeah -- jackie brown has some of the best character work in any tarantino film and thats bc its anchored by leonards story and the truly poignant relationship between foster and grier.
Apr 30, 2015 Django was one of the best films of 2012. It has a few third act problems, but I would never dream of calling it his weakest. If anything I think the problems with that film arise because of sequences from the script that he cut out. Not because of the tone he chose to take with it. And if you're complaint about k--- bill is the "comic book" tone, I think you have a fundamental misunderstanding of what the film is trying to be.

Apr 30, 2015 I would personally place A Serious Man over Inside Llewyn Davis but both are among their best work. The same goes for Punch-Drunk Love & Inherent Vice, which is why I think it would be a cool match-up. Even tho I'm a PTA stan so I'd probably go with his in both cases, but it would be very close.
Apr 30, 2015 No, I don't "misunderstand" what k--- Bill was trying to be (how dare you), lol. I just didn't care for what it was. I was a huge QT fan "back in the day" and just think the live action comic direction is easy, and beneath his talents in a lot of ways. He's making great entertainment for teenagers and film nerds now, not knocking him... but after PF helped changed the game of what was possible cinematically, i think he was prime for bigger things. (that said, killing hitler in IB was bold, and the kind of innovative third way stuff i think he should be exploring) i mean, thats a fair assessment of django's problems, and perhaps it isnt as weak as, say, k--- bill (imo) or grindhouse/four rooms, if those even count. but its a traditional story, mostly and the ways that it entertains verges on the racial third rail which has often bogged qt throughout his career.
Apr 30, 2015 I'm probably alone on this. I actually prefer The Assassination of Jesse James over both these two films. That's not to say that I don't love them -- between the two of them, I prefer There Will Be Blood. 2007 was an amazing year.
Apr 30, 2015 That's probably in my top 5 for the year, behind these two and Zodiac. Its an excellent film, and the train robbery sequence really is stunning. And is it affleck's best performance? I'm trying to think of a better perfornance of his and I can't think of one.

Apr 30, 2015 I agree with most of these basic criticisms of Django but I still think the film is a blast To me Basterds and Pulp Fiction are easily his best, but I enjoy everything he's done tbh Having said that, for some of the reasons that Django is probably lower tier Tarantino...I sort of wish he was doing something other than Hateful Eight. Haven't read the script, so for all I know it's a masterpiece. But at this point he definitely runs the risk of getting a bit redundant. Doesn't sound like it's going to explore territory he hasn't already mastered
