Apr 27, 2015i am a huge, huge, huge fan of the prestige. i think it's one of the best scripts ever filmed. bale is great, jackman is very good. it's the best scarjo performance. the degree of difficulty in not only making a double-framing-device structure work, but reveal major plot points, is genius.
i'm still going to vote for the departed, because it's got much stronger performances top-to-bottom, is both grittier AND funnier, is tighter (prestige meanders in the second half of the second act). it's almost perfect except for that stupid f---ing final shot.
it's closer than people in here seem to think, but departed wins.

The Departed, easily. It's near flawless up until the last 30 or so seconds. And I think the reason I love it so much is that even with all the plot twists and turns, it hasn't lost any of its intensity or suspense after 20+ viewings. It's hilarious, thrilling, engrossing, and sees career best performances from Mark Wahlberg and Matt Damon. Jack Nicholson is excellent, and if you had told me 8 years ago that this wasn't Leonardo DiCaprio's finest work I wouldn't have believed you (the man really is the GOAT). Scorcese's most entertaining and rewatchable film, and I stick by that even in a post WOWS world.
The Prestige is still really great tho, and it's probably Nolan's best work. I don't want to shortchange it at all.Ordinary Joel, Packman, FlawlessT and 1 other person like this. -

I gotta say, after totally souring on Nolan with TDKR, I was really impressed with Interstellar. Very entertaining - May 10, 2025

They have the same IMDB scores and came out in the same month so I thought it'd be a fun matchup.

Both are top notch thrillers by esteemed directors with all star casts.
Both keep you guessing until the final scene.
