My partner and I had a medical abortion shortly after we started seeing each other. We were young and reckless and ended up pregnant like two months into our relationship. We weren’t in a position to bring a child into the world. We both lived at home, had s-----y dead-end jobs, barely knew each other, and wouldn't have been able to provide for a child. The average child costs a family an additional $20,000/y.

Fast forward a few years and we had a home, well-paying jobs, and a relationship that existed for longer than two months. We were in a much better position when we decided to have a baby. I've been a parent for almost 2 years now and have ZERO regrets about abortion. If we weren't able to do it, our child wouldn't be the happy, healthy, and provided for child that he is today.

We should celebrate the fact that as humans we are able make the correct choices for ourselves and others.

Everybody in this thread talking like there’s no other reasons to need an abortion other than being ‘an idiot’ or being r---d. There’s also circumstantial medical problems that can arise during pregnancies where the mother needs an abortion merely to survive.

Also when acknowledging the ‘being an idiot’ argument, adding your own anecdotal personal responsibility to the argument instead of an analysis on a society’s material conditions that shape decisions for example; poverty (financial stress), education (lack thereof influencing ‘idiotic’ decisions), time for parenting (work-life & already straddled with family-oriented dependencies), is not taking a valid stance using the understanding of situational complications so is therefore nothing more than useless babble.

The highest abortion rate is in single mothers in their 20s from poor backgrounds (5x more likely whilst in poverty) usually of non-white ethnicity (2x more likely) & lack of high school education. Over half of the USA’s pregnancies are unplanned & half of those are due to lack of access to birth control which is why the USA’s abortion rates are alike to developing countries. There’s a clear connection to how the birth of said unwanted child will have a knock-on effect on the physical & mental well-being of not only the child, but the mother & the projection of the 2 problems = society as a whole as they are integrated into the external-environment affecting other children & spawning a constant generational cycle of abused children becoming abusive adults from trauma, all that can be completely avoided with a simple law.

Conservatives will always try to utilise [pseudo]-science when it suits with takes like the debunked ‘overpopulation’ myth & ‘murdering a child in the womb’ even though 9 out of 10 women terminate during the 1st trimester, but then ignore [contextual] science within the same & other arguments for religious or just ignorant stances. If you want to use science, then stop burying your heads in the sand & read the countless studies that have calculated the negative affects non-legal abortion routes create in societies, if to you the individual’s traumas/deaths aren’t enough & listening to women including the ones who’ve survived the ordeals isn’t enough, there’s a myriad of data aligning with each other that this is simply a regressive policy & it is pretty unbelievable that still to this day, this is a bottomless nonsensical argument across supposedly progressive countries. We clearly still have a long way to go.

So what you mean is you both consented to sex like adults, but didn't speak on the repercussions of having unprotected sex/what you would both do if pregnancy was the outcome? How many types of contraceptives are needed to be readily available, before we as the human race takes on a grain of salt worth of self-responsibility and goes "okay I could have used a condom, asked her to use birth control, had a vasectomy, pulled out, not had sex until ready. " Etc.

But no it was just a crazy thing that happened and you had no option but to terminate it. I mean…it doesn’t have to be either/or. It can be both. And there’s nothing wrong with taking into account your own quality of life when making this decision. Women having kids to just to grow up to dread the rest of their lives isn’t ideal & will likely negatively impact the child growing up too. One of my closest friends has a kid (5 year old) & is currently pregnant with another. Neither of her pregnancies were planned. She is pro-choice but would never get an abortion herself. But even she has acknowledged, this 2nd baby is going to really take a toll on her life moving forward & the rational/most responsible thing to do from a financial/mental/emotional stand point would be to get an abortion. She would be able to offer the child she already has so much more. But she just personally wouldn’t be able to stomach going through with that.
