Serious thread. What is your take on suicide? I know people bring up valid points about it being selfish and irrational, and people who counteract those points by saying that people should be in charge of their own lives.

    So, let's chat.

I'm personally against it.. it goes against my religious beliefs, but I won't turn the thread into that. It's a sad situation when it happens regardless, and it leaves the burden on the family, and it's a selfish cowardly act in my views.

I am not one of those people who look at it as a cowardly act. Obviously people who do this have some serious issues.

One of the most irrational reasons I feel is high school bullying. I mean, people commit suicide because they don't want to go through 4 rough years of high school... 4 years... that's potentially 2.8% of your life... That leaves 97.2% of whatever you want to make it. f---, you could've been the first human on mars for all you know...

I don't think it's right, but it's terrible that people can actually feel that way. Depression is a serious thing people deal with everyday. I've had plenty of suicide incidents in my family and some have even been my friends. It's terrible as someone who loves them to think about what I could've done to help or prevent the situation. It may be a cowardly way to go, but mental illness is a big contributor. That's from personal experience.

Mixed thoughts, I could go on and on about my views on it

But at the end of the day, it's still the saddest thing ever and nobody should be put in a state where they consider it.

It's obviously not that simple if they're actually wiling to go through with it. I mean if it actually leads to that, there is something incredibly wrong with the way your brain is functioning. Just strongly wanting to do it indicates that as well of course though. I agree it's no reason to k--- yourself but that's a black and white way of thinking imo... and it's easy to think in that way in a normal/sane state of mind.

There are different kinds of bullying, and 4 years in hs is like 1/4 + something of your life before finishing hs. It's not that simple.

this discussion happens often too. the debate on whether depression is a disease/illness or not. lots of people take it lightly and some even play it off thinking the person is acting like that for extra attention.

yes I agree. people who consider this are ill, whether they want to believe it or not. they need to be closely watched, properly consoled, and possibly medicated. depression shouldn't be taken lightly

I think both arguments are fair. A lot of times, people in high school do it because of bullying, embarrassment, or, like you said, extra attention. It's more of a mental illness thing with adults.

This is all from personal experience. I'm not sure if this is what's common, but it is in my life.

When you think about it, it is kinda selfish b/c people will always say "Well, your life could be worse" but it doesn't change the fact that depression and/or mental illness can be very severe if you're not able to control it. No one should even have to think about ending their life because life is a beautiful thing and everyone should have the opportunity to live well and healthy. But not everyone has the same luck and if you go through some traumatizing experiences and feel sad all the time it can really f--- with your brain. Unless you've been in that situation where you were depressed yourself or had a friend that committed suicide, I don't think anyone can truly understand.
