May 12, 2015 The fact that you've been living under a rock for 20-something years and/or only listen to rap doesn't mean that Beck is a nobody that won a grammy with a "hipster" record (which was great, actually).
May 13, 2015 The Grammys don't give a f--- about artistry. They could give a s--- about who had the best album. Let alone Rap album. It's mostly old, rich, white people who vote. The people who win are mainstream label brands who are only given awards to sell more records. Sometimes A good/real artist slips through the cracks and wins. But IGGY even being nominated proves the voters are biased and know nothing about hiphop. Heres another example. Eminem's SSLP, MMLP, and TES were all grammy deserving albums. Everything after? No. He won because he was white. f---in Relapse won in 09, are you telling me there were no other albums that deserved it more? f--- even Encore was nominated and that album is bs. This year MMLP2 won beating out Commons album, Q's, and Gambinos. They knew there would be an uproar if iggy won but they still picked the white artist. They didn't televise it either. The grammy's don't matter for any genre but they mean absolutely nothing to HipHop. If they did than GKMC would have won Best Album. And a number of Rap albums would have at least been nominated for best album. So f--- the grammys. But I'd be lying if I said I didn't watch em
May 13, 2015 So why do you need to be personal? Did I ever say that? Why do you throw words into my mouth? It's not like you have a single clue of what music I am listening to.Thats how I think. Deal with it. Also Beck's album was fine. Still not a impactful as Beyonce's album was. You been living under the rock?
May 13, 2015 Relax man, it's not a big deal. Put the "you don't know me" card but in the deck, it's a forum, ofc I don't know you. I didn't mention B in my post and I didn't talk about impact, I only talked about Beck's "hipster record" (your words, I didn't put anything in your mouth) and how it was very good, and he deserved the grammy. Beyonce's album is probably her best so far. It was big and having all these music videos was an interesting idea, no one denies that. You say that Beck's album is "hipster" and now you're talking about Beyonce's impact, but earlier you were saying that they prefer big sellers. You can look both these albums' sales up and see for yourself what's the deal. What you're saying is contradicting. Do they prefer mainstream, not mainstream, or anti-mainstream artists? I don't get you. Regarding tpab, it made a lot of noise during the weeks around its release, and it's been reviewed like crazy and always very positive. Still, we're in May, it's way too early. Depending on what Kanye and Drake do, rap aoty can go either way I guess? He won a grammy with i and the album was very well received, so he could actually win. Tbh if I were to give the aoty grammy (across all genres) right now, I wouldn't pick tpab and we're still in May. There are many amazing albums that's been released so far, and I expect a busy summer with more contenders that can be potentially huge. But, based on the actual music that I've listened to so far, I wouldn't give it to kendrick by any means, and I'm a huge kendrick fan (I was disappointed with tpab tbh, but that's not the point here). The problem I see with rap at the grammys is that the albums that are nominated aren't always the best, I mean in 2013 which was a great year, they nominated God Forgives I Don't, in 2012 they nominated Lasers and similar s--- like that (and sometimes "s--- like that" actually wins a grammy, like Relapse or The Heist). If you look at last years nominations regarding rap, there's no way that one of these albums deserved to win (same goes with most of the previous years, the only exception is 2012 when they didn't even push MBDTF in the poll, lol; GKMC is amazing, but RAM was really something else). I don't see rap getting overlooked, I think that the albums that are nominated don't deserve to win s---, basically. You can say that rap's overlooked in that sense (that they ignore some of the better records and pick albums like FNL2 for best rap of the year lol), but the albums that actually get nominations don't deserve the best aoty (6/7 times in the last 7 years).
May 13, 2015 Not to be @red rum, but the Grammy committee is a bunch of older white dudes, tell me what you think their opinion of TPAB will be?
May 13, 2015 Its too soon to guess. Summer/Fall '15 could/should/hopefully will be pretty lit musically
May 13, 2015 You did put words in my mouth. Let me quote you right there "and/or only listen to rap music". So don't make assumptions of my listening habits, when you don't know about me. I'm not doing it either. So? I felt the need to mention Beyonce's impact with her album. Am I not allowed to write out different aspects/thoughts? Obviously, all things matter. Grammy's obviously do care for mainstream success too. Otherwise some albums would never even receive nominations. Yeah I did said that the Grammy's also prefer big sellers. I mean critically panned albums were nominated for AOTY, but those were really successful saleswise. So you see where I'm going at? But thats just one aspect I was talking about. I would say they prefer every kind of bit of all mentioned things. I wouldn't say the focus is on just one aspect. Although we won't know how they determine their votes. Like is it about how successful the album was? Is it about the critical acclaim? Or even the impact the album had to the industry? It all depends.
May 13, 2015 oh no. we should all fear the hipster records and hide in the closet where we keep our close-minded views
May 13, 2015 My quote was this, actually: "you've been living under a rock for 20-something years and/or only listen to rap". Beck's been making music for 20+ years, and you worded the OP like he won a grammy basically out of nowhere with "another hipster album" like no one cared about it, at least that's what I took from your post. In the last 6 years the aoty award winners are: Beck, Daft Punk, Mumford and Sons, Adele, Arcade Fire and Taylor Swift. I really don't understand how you can say that any of these artists' albums are "hipster". And yeah, there's really no way that someone can say that Beck's record was a hipster record. You're allowed to mention different thoughts, but you're doing it selectively imo. You complained about how they care about mainstream success, then you say that "hipster" albums get grammys that they don't deserve. Out of these nominations in the last years, I think that the best album wins, most of the time. MBDTF should have won (and it wasn't even nominated lol), and I'd probably choose El Camino and then Chanel Orange over Babel, but the rest are pretty accurate (regarding who won out the contenders; personally I'd have swapped contenders in many occasions, but that's not the point). I don't disagree with the rest of what you said, I guess it depends on what the contenders are each year for every genre. Personally I'm just happy when some of the artists that I listen to are nominated, like alt-J and St. Vincent last year, so they get some kind of recognition and hopefully more fans. Other than that I don't really care.
